Should lone entry get a ‘blue ribbon’ automatically at fair?

At February’s meeting of the Senior Fair Board, members entered into many discussions and resolved to
have the committees bring many of the decisions back to the board at the March meeting.
One of the more animated discussions centered on how placements should be made at the fair in departments
when there might only be one entry in a category. Most of the directors believed that entry should
automatically be awarded first place as it was the best, though only one, shown at the fair. At least
one department chair noted that the judge in that department is fundamentally opposed to giving what
they see as an inferior exhibit a first place award if it is not "deserving" of a blue ribbon.

Also focusing on entries, there was also some discussion about timing, noting some department entries,
such as the produce in farm goods or flowers in the flower show, are impossible to predict very far in
advance of the fair and thus, they should be allowed to have same-day entries. Board members also
discussed the merits of having some entry fees in certain departments or categories, but not in others.

The grounds committee also notified members of upcoming projects such as replacing the roof on the
"red roof" horse barn, painting the rabbit barn, as well as replacing doors on both the draft
horse and rabbit barns.
The board was also was informed the ceiling tiles in the Annex Building have all been replaced.
Members also referred discussion regarding camping rates to the committee which will meet on March 12 at
7 p.m.
The board is also looking at the board members purchasing shirts to help identify them at the fair and
promote the fair when worn at other times. The committee will bring more samples to the March meeting.
