The March meeting of the Wood County Agricultural Society was actually held in April, with good news announced of a free concert to be provided on Friday of fair week.
At Thursday's Senior Fair Board meeting members were very active in organizing various aspects of the fast-approaching 2013 Wood County Fair. One of the major decisions was to offer The Lost Trailers as a free concert following the cheerleading competition on Aug. 2 at 9 p.m. There had been discussion of having a nominal charge for the concert, but the board voted to let fairgoers enjoy a free country music concert.
The group has had several hit songs on the country charts including "Chicken Fried," "Call Me Crazy," "Holler Back," "How 'bout You Don't," and last year's "American Beauty."
Speaking of concerts, the headline concert the following night will be the Beach Boys. Tickets for that concert go on sale April 13 from 8 a.m. to noon at the Administration Building.
The board also approved spending $25,000 toward lighting and other improvements in the area associated with the new grandstands which have been installed between the main grandstands and the Administration Building. Three light poles were removed and the replacement lighting will provide light for the infield and track. There will be an area under the new bleachers which will be finished for a sheltered eating area complete with picnic tables. There will be new lights installed in that area for fairgoers to enjoy the many favorites offered along the midway.
The total project cost of the various parts of the improvements will be $82,480. The Northwest Ohio Tractor Pullers Association will foot the bill for the remainder of the costs (nearly $57,500) as part of the cooperative agreement for the area.
The board also approved an agreement with the City of Bowling Green for the $890 monthly demand fee to be waived temporarily by the city on the condition that it placed in a restricted fund for use in upgrading electrical equipment and operations at the fairgrounds.
Because of the recent history of inclement weather during the fair concerts, the board is also looking into obtaining a generator which would provide power to the office and other key systems for safety and communication.
In other news the board:
• Heard a proposal regarding upgrades and new backdrops for livestock show and sale photographs
• Learned that the agricultural society and similar entities have been declared political subdivisions and thus remain tax-exempt in regard to certain matters
• Approved the installation of a crosswalk and traffic signals on Poe Road at Gate B. The addition of a second crosswalk in the area west of the current main gate will increase safety for fairgoers and for the Wood County Sheriff's Department and Auxiliary which uses that gate for its golf cart pick-up service to the main parking area across Poe Road.
• Approved the purchase of stainless steel markers for the campgrounds to be installed permanently to designate camping lots.
• Announced the king and queen interviews will be held July 14 at the Wood County Senior Center.
• Directors were reminded the meetings move to 7:30 p.m. beginning with the regular April meeting on April 25. It will be a joint meeting with the Junior Fair Board and will be held in the newly renovated Livestock Exhibition Building, better known as the Champion Barn.
