Local youth excel at Beef Expo events

Beef industry enthusiasts gathered in Columbus March 14-16, for the 2014 Ohio Beef Expo. Several youth
performed well as part of the Expo including two Wood County judging teams winning their respective
divisions.
On March 15, the event’s judging contest was held with Wood County 1 taking top honors in the junior
division and Wood County Purple winning the senior division.
Members of the championship junior team included Sydney Mazey, who placed fourth overall, individually;
as well as Kylie O’Brien, who placed eighth overall. Ashlyn O’Brien and Hayden Belleville joined them on
the winning team. The senior champions were Justin Nofziger, Garrett Tuck, Lane Kemner, and Kirsten
Ameling. Nofziger led the team by placing ninth overall, individually.
Among the other high individuals, Logan Browne of the Wood County Blue team, placed fifth individually in
the senior division.

Participants in this event evaluated live cattle classes and were required to answer questions regarding
those classes.
In a separate event, Landon Richards placed sixth overall in the senior showmanship contest. The event
was divided into five age divisions, novice, beginner, junior, intermediate and senior.
The Expo also included a trade show, six breed shows and a breed parade on the first day; and seven more
breed shows on the second day.
The Ohio Cattlemen’s Association hosted more than 30,000 participants and attendees at the Ohio Expo
Center. The Expo provides an annual opportunity for those in the cattle industry in Ohio, and across the
nation, to learn and enhance their businesses and operations through exhibition and sales.
Ohio’s youth exhibited 692 steers and heifers, 343 participated in the showmanship competition and 279
competed in the judging contest.
The dates for the 2015 Ohio Beef Expo are March 20-22.
