Recently, the Internal Revenue Service issued guidance on providing relief from the estimated tax penalty for farmers and fishermen unable to file and pay their 2012 taxes by the March 1 deadline. This guidance was issued due to the delayed start for filing tax returns stemming from HR 8. Under the guidance, farmers or fishermen who miss the March 1 deadline will not be subject to the penalty if they file and pay by April 15, and attach Form 2210-F to their tax return.
This new deadline will now be honored for Ohio income tax purposes. Taxpayers should elect the farmers and fishermen option on the Ohio 2210 long form when filing their 2012 Ohio income tax returns and file it and pay by April 15.
