Connor Rose will appear as the opening act for the Gretchen Wilson concert at the 2012 Wood County Fair. The announcement was made at the May Senior Fair Board meeting on Thursday. Rose is a 15-year-old from Bowling Green, who just finished his sophomore year at Bowling Green High School. He will sing for 30 minutes, beginning at 8 p.m. on Aug. 4, prior to the headliner Wilson. The young student is quickly making a name for himself around Northwest Ohio. His love of country and blue grass music will fit in well with the fair and Wilson's genre. In addition to singing, Rose plays mandolin, harmonica, and piano. It was also announced ticket sales for the concert are going well with just under 1,000 sold. King indicated this is on pace or ahead of most years. The concert will not be the only appearance for Rose at this year's fair. He is also set to perform on the opening day (July 30) from 8 to 10 p.m. and on Aug. 2 at 11 a.m. in the free tent. Conner
The monthly meeting was comparatively short as two of the key committee chairmen were not in attendance and submitted written reports, and most of the agenda was filled with updates on the rapidly approaching 2012 Wood County Fair. Secretary and Fair Manager Dick King reminded board members there was only 67 days remaining. Members approved purchasing metal markers which will be used to designate camping spots in the campground. David Chamberlain provided a promotional flyer for the National Pulling Championship series of animal pulls set for Aug. 1 at the grandstands. The mule pull will begin the day at 9 a.m. The pony pull will be featured at 2 p.m.; while the horse pull is set for 7 p.m. There are two classes for each animal with 10 places to be paid in each class. This is a bold move for the fair board as it tries to rejuvenate an event which has not had great interest in recent years. One major concern raised involved recent changes to the water bill from the City of Bowling Green. King said they have recently turned on the water and are facing a monthly fee of $130 each month for each of the three main meters which serve the fairgrounds. This is a flat fee without the first drop of water flowing through the pipes. Members decided they would seek a time, likely after the fair, to meet with city officials to see what alternatives could be found to reduce their obligation for the meters to just sit there with no water flowing for much of the time. The board was also informed Mike Marsh has been retained as the attorney for the Wood County Agricultural Society and the fair. Doug Michaelis has been diligently working when schedules align to refinish the pillars in the Junior Fair Building. Approximately half of the them have been completed. He hopes to get the rest before the fair, however there are no guarantees as he has to work around both his available time and the rental schedule of the building. Work is also progressing on the ongoing project of bleacher renovation in the grandstands.
