The Elmwood FFA recently experienced success at the District 1 FFA Ag. Mechanics Skills Career Development Event by capturing second place. The competition for the contest took place on Feb. 28, at the Four County Career Center near Archbold.
The Skills event tests students' abilities to complete a variety of mechanical oriented skills that are employed in agriculture. This year's contest required students to complete seven stations with a time limit of 10 minutes per station. Examples of skill stations included sharpening a drill bit, drilling and tapping a hole for a specific size fastener, arc welding a T-weld and lap weld, performing a variety of electrical tests and measurements, using a oxy-acetylene torch to cut metal, flaring and bending of copper tubing, performing measurements using a micrometer, small hole gage, and dial caliper along with determining wear tolerances for parts, assessing oils and related information, and identifying tools and fasteners.
The top two teams from each district advance to the state competition which will be held in mid April. The chapter's team made the trip worthwhile as senior Jon Shinew claimed fifth place individual honors. Not far behind was senior Isaiah Lundquest in eighth place. Rounding out the team was Casey Heller in11th place out of 24 total contestants.
Competing on that same day was the chapter's Outdoor Power Equipment team (formerly known as small gas engines team). In this event contestants completed several different stations to test their knowledge of outdoor power equipment. Examples of skill stations included: troubleshooting a small gas engine for "bugs", measuring cylinder bore and valve tappet clearance, looking up information in a service manual, servicing valves, assembling a complete electrical starting system, identifying tools and parts, and completing a written test. The team ranked second out of 13 teams and now has the right to advance to the state contest which will be held in late April. Individual accomplishments by team members included: Casey Heller, fourth, Robbie Sigler, fifth and Isaiah Lundquest, 21st.
