Eastwood FFA and local calf club receive $5K PDF Print E-mail

PEMBERVILLE - American Legion's Freedom Post 183 Calf Club and Eastwood FFA will now be able to better serve the community, thanks to the support of local farmers, Ryan and Kristine Buchman from R&R Buchman Farms, and America's Farmers Grow Communities.
Sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, the philanthropic arm of Monsanto Company, Grow Communities provides farmers in eligible counties the chance to win a $2,500 donation for a local nonprofit organization of their choice.  
To further support counties declared natural disaster areas by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) due to drought this year, winning farmers in these counties are able to direct double donations, a total of $5,000.
Wood County was declared a disaster area by the USDA, giving the Buchman's the opportunity to choose two organizations to receive $2,500 donations. They chose American Legion's Freedom Post 183 Calf Club and Eastwood FFA.
Both checks were presented Monday night during the annual Eastwood FFA banquet at the Riverview Banquet Centre.
Ryan Buchman addressed those gathered as did Ralph E. Geil, resource manager for LG Seeds, as he represented Monsanto for the presentation.
The calf club will use the donation to make improvements on the cattle barn; while the FFA plans to use the donation to improve the agricultural classroom by replacing outdated machines.
"Our kids go to Eastwood, so we wanted to support the FFA," said Kristine Buchman. "They are also involved in the cattle club and show steers and my husband is the American Legions treasurer."

Acknowledging the Buchman family, he added, "We are truly grateful for your continuing support of our chapter through this wonderful gift."
In thanking Geil, Martin noted, "Without the tremendous assistance from companies such as yours in addition to this strong community, we would not be able to fulfill the National FFA's Mission of making a "positive difference through leadership and agricultural education."
Martin also noted how the calf club's activities also benefit chapter members and others in the area "through youth cattle shows during the annual Pemberville Free Fair
Jack Recker, representing the Freedom Post calf club, in accepting the award thanked the Buchman family and Monsanto noting, "It's quite a thing you did for us."
This year, the Monsanto Fund will invest nearly $6 million in rural America through Grow Communities, which includes double donations for counties impacted by the historic drought.
In Ohio, $160,000 is being given across 64 counties.
America's Farmers Grow Communities is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund to partner with farmers in helping them positively impact their communities. This program is part of the Monsanto Fund's overall effort to strengthen rural America.
