Dr. Ian Blount, Sr. will discuss agribusiness entrepreneurship at the Northwest Ohio Ag-Business Breakfast Forum April 17, from 8 - 9:30 a.m. at the Agricultural Incubator Foundation.  
Blount, vice president and COO of Coalescence, LLC, has years of experience in the food and agribusiness industries. He served as director of food service sales at Glory Foods, and was the national account manager for Kahiki Foods, where he was responsible for developing and growing business with club stores like Costco and Walmart.
In 2005, he and his wife started Coalescence, a customer food ingredient and flavor  manufacturing company in Columbus.

ODA certified Ohio marketing referendum PDF Print E-mail

REYNOLDSBURG - The Ohio Department of Agriculture has certified the results of the Ohio Corn Marketing Program Referendum. The referendum, seeking to increase the state checkoff on corn from ½ of a cent to ¾ of a cent per bushel, received enough favorable votes to pass.
A total of 964 votes were certified; 819 votes, or 85 percent of the total, were cast in favor of the referendum and 145 votes, or 15 percent, were opposed to the increase.  Producers were able to vote by absentee ballot, and also in person at the Ohio Department of Agriculture, the Ohio Corn and Wheat Growers Association Office, and at OSU Extension offices.
The provisions of the Ohio Corn Marketing Program are defined in section 924 of the Ohio Revised Code. The ODA has the authority through section 924 to oversee state commodity checkoff programs, including administration of the referendum process, budgetary oversight, and authority to assist in establishing new commodity programs.

JERRY CITY - Almost a steady stream of Elmwood FFA members crossed the stage Saturday night to be recognized for their achievements over the past year.
The annual banquet was held in the school's auditeria with more than 280 members, family and guests in attendance.
Steve Casey was recognized with the honorary chapter degree, and Mary Ellen Dirksheide was bestowed with the Outstanding Service award. Among the top student awards, Noah Fouty and Luke Hagemeyer were the recipients of the Star Greenhand award; while both Taylor Barndt and Alexis Miller received the Star Chapter Degree award.
Casey's introduction indicated how he has been very helpful to the chapter. That service has included being an officer with the chapter's Alumni group as well as his assistance with the chapter's beef stand at the Wood County fair, the test plot and the summer social.
It was also noted, "Through the years he has always provided training and preparation for the chapter's various mechanical related contest teams."
Casey has also helped the chapter with its toy show, charity work auction and meal preparation for the banquet.

Federal disaster assistance program sign-up to begin PDF Print E-mail

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Agriculture's has announced farmers and ranchers can sign-up for disaster assistance programs, reestablished and strengthened by the 2014 Farm Bill, beginning Tuesday.
"President Obama and Secretary Vilsack made it a priority to begin enrollment for these programs," said the administrator, Juan M. Garcia. "For farmers and ranchers who have been awaiting disaster assistance, help is on the way."
The Livestock Indemnity Program and the Livestock Forage Disaster Program will provide payments to eligible producers for livestock deaths and grazing losses that have occurred since the expiration of the livestock disaster assistance programs in 2011, and including calendar years 2012, 2013, and 2014.
Enrollment also begins on April 15 for producers with losses covered by the Emergency Assistance for Livestock, Honeybees, and Farm-Raised Fish Program (and the Tree Assistance Program in 2011, when the programs expired, through 2014.

Perry Go Getters
Perry Go Getters 4-H Club had its meeting on Sunday, April 6 at the Perry Township Shelter.  
The Constitution for the club as well as project books were passed out. Ideas for the fair booth were discussed and will be decided at a future meeting.
Demonstrations were given by Nick Stearns on seed germination, Joe Huff on checking tire pressure and the oil level in vehicles, and McKenzie Mercer on tooling leather.
Dates for livestock weigh-ins and quality assurance meetings were talked about.  
Volunteer schedule was made to help at the West Millgrove Volunteer Fire Department Fish Fry on April 25-26.
Refreshments were provided by McKenzie Mercer and Joe Huff.
