‘4R’ program finalized, launched on Tuesday

PERRYSBURG – On Tuesday, the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program will be introduced to
agricultural retailers, service providers and other certified professionals in the Western Lake Erie
Basin to adopt proven best practices through the 4Rs, which refers to using the Right Nutrient Source at
the Right Rate and Right Time in the Right Place.
Many local growers have already adopted the practices touted in this program, having been part of the
testing process, they have used the core concepts for some time.
The launch event will be held at the Holiday Inn French Quarter 10630 Fremont Pike, Perrysburg, in
Perrysburg, and will include a background and overview of the program, an agriculture industry panel and
remarks from those involved in the tri-state area.
Special guests include David Daniels, director of the Ohio Department of Agriculture; Jim Zehringer,
director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources; Craig Butler, director of the Ohio Environmental
Protection Agency; Jim Byrum, president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association; and Beth Bechdol,
president of the Agribusiness Council of Indiana.
The 4R Nutrient Stewardship Certification Program is governed and guided by the Nutrient Stewardship
Council, a diverse set of stakeholders from business, government, university and non-governmental
sectors with a common goal of maintaining agricultural productivity while also improving the quality of
Lake Erie and its contributing watersheds.
The program is administered by the Ohio AgriBusiness Association.
