Steven L. Thornton, M.D., assistant professor of clinical psychiatry at the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria (UICOMP) was recently awarded the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award to a faculty member by the Arnold P. Gold Foun-dation.
Thornton is the son of Donald and Maxine Thornton of Lemoyne, and a 1973 graduate of Eastwood High School.
Thornton, who received a B.S. in medical technology from Manchester College in 1977, has been a member of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine faculty at UICOMP since 2008.
He received his doctorate in podiatric medicine from the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine in 1983, earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Ill. in 1992, and completed a residency training program in medicine and psychiatry in 1997. He practiced and taught in the Division of Medicine and Psychiatry at SlU until 2000. He continued on as a voluntary faculty member at SIU until 2008, when he came to UICOMP.
Thornton is board certified in both internal medicine and psychiatry and holds a subspecialty certification in behavioral neurology and neuropsychiatry.
The Arnold P. Gold Foundation sponsors the annual Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Awards at 96 of the nation's medical schools. It is presented to a student and a faculty member who, through a rigorous review process, are judged to be exemplary in their compassion and sensitivity in patient care.
Thornton received the award earlier this month during a presentation held by UICOMP in East Peoria, Ill.
One of four campuses that make up the largest public medical school in the U.S., the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria educates more than 150 medical students annually and offers 20 graduate medical training programs.
