A collaborative community service effort by more than two dozen Northwest Ohio high schools is featured in the spring issue of the Ohio School Boards Association Journal magazine, a statewide publication.
The magazine spotlighted student volunteer work coordinated through a program facilitated by Leadership Toledo, a nonprofit leadership development group for youth and adults. The program, known as the Youth Jefferson Awards/Students in Action, is part of a national initiative by the Jefferson Awards for Public Service to encourage leadership and service at the high school level.
Last year alone, students at 24 Northwest Ohio high schools logged more than 145,000 hours of community service, making an estimated $3.05 million impact. The student group, which now includes 31 area high schools, is on track to greatly surpass those numbers this year.
The magazine issue is available electronically at http://links.ohioschoolboards.org/21292.
The official magazine of OSBA, the Journal is a statewide bimonthly publication featuring association activities, articles and reports of interest to Ohio's public education leaders. The roughly 7,000 Journal subscribers include school board members, superintendents, treasurers, business officials, legislators and news media.
Among the school participating in the project were the following who have Wood County students enrolled: Lake High School, Maumee Valley Country Day School, Northwood High School, Perrysburg High School, Rossford High School, St. Francis de Sales High School, St. John's Jesuit and St. Ursula Academy.
