ROSSFORD – High school drama club students will travel to two grade schools Friday where they will
perform the play, "New Canadian Kid" by Dennis Koon.
The play explores the frustration and fears of bullying in a school setting.
Nick (Justin Maluchnik) and his family, including Mom (Emily Cuprys), travel from "Homeland" to
Canada where he must assimilate into his grade school, facing the fears of a new language.
He also meets a new friend Mencha (Dotty Morris) and bully Mog (Steve Everitt).
The drama will be presented at Eagle Point Grade School at 9:15 a.m. and Indian Ridge Grade School at
1:45 p.m.
Afterward, the performers will host a question-and-answer session with students.
Topics will include:
• Hardships of being an outsider
• How the lead character handles being picked on
• How to talk to a parent and open up when you are feeling threatened
• How to open up and accept help from a friend
• How to be a friend and help someone who is being bullied
• How to accept someone who might be a little different from you
• Different tactics you can use to avoid being bullied
• How to stand up for yourself.
This short play will also be performed at the EDTA State Theater Conference at Centerville High School in
late March, where it will be seen by numerous high schools statewide.
