PERRYSBURG - Members of the Perrysburg Court Law and Government Explorer Post elected the club's leadership for the coming year.
Michael Gerber is president; Alex Leong serves as vice president; Niara Williams is correspondence secretary; Emily Cottle was re-elected as recording secretary; Megan Galle is treasurer; and Clara Thornberry is historian.
The 40 current members of the Explorer Post are awaiting delivery of the 2013-2014 mock trial case materials. This year's mock trial case capsule involves a case in which a high school agrees to license the naming rights of its field to a large corporation. In response, students organize protests both in school and on the field. The school district responds by installing security cameras, searching lockers of the students involved and filing a lawsuit seeking an order authorizing the school to remove the students from the field. The students claim that the school district's actions violated their First and Fourth Amendment rights.
The members will be forming teams to argue this case starting with district competition on Jan. 31.
Ohio Mock Trial is designed to foster a better understanding of the American democratic legal system and to encourage development of analytical and communication skills. The teams are coached by Peter R. Casey III, Kent Riesen, Dan Weiss, Adam Nowland and Judge S. Dwight Osterud.
Dr. Beth Rohrbacher and Pinky Edens assist with their expertise.
Explorer alumna Krista Huff and University of Toledo law student Jake Studer also help coach the teams.
High school students are invited to join the post and compete in the statewide mock trial competition. Information about joining is available from Jennifer Meece at 419-874-7915 or the website www.perrysburgcourt.com.
