TONTOGANY - The words of Dr. Seuss will jump from the page as the Otsego Choral Department presents "Seussical the Musical" on the Otsego Performing Arts Center Stage March 21-24.
The musical uses 17 of Dr. Seuss' books but the story centers around Horton the Elephant portrayed by senior Joey Gehring, being faced with two dilemmas simultaneously. He must try to save all of the tiny people of Whoville while also protecting a hatching egg abandoned by his irresponsible friend, Mayzie La Bird, played by senior Kira Businger.
Of course no Seuss story would be complete without the Cat in the Hat popping up here and there. Otsego's Cat will be portrayed by senior Tom Rodgers.
Horton also has a secret admirer in Gertrude McFuzz who is in love with him. Gertrude is played by senior Brooke Kennedy.
There is a large supporting cast which includes senior Natalie Wright as the Sour Kangaroo; and senior Curtis Rea, who is double cast as both the Grinch and a Wickersham Brother. The other two Wickersham Brothers include junior Josh Tremonti and sophomore Justen Garmenn.
Senior Ellie Whitmer, sophomore Eva Scott, and freshman Casey Barbour compose The Bird Girl Trio.
All of the Whos in Whoville will be lead by Mr. And Mrs. Mayor played by sophomore Jeffrey Agan and junior Dayna Fackler respectively. Their son Jojo will be portrayed by Elijah Haynes, an Otsego sixth-grader. Freshman Derek Morgan will play General Gengus Khan Schmitz.
Lead Jungle Creatures include senior Jeremy Pultz as Judge Yertle the Turtle, sophomore Gavin Spilker as Vlad Vladikoff, and Otsego fourth-grader Madeline Berry as the Young Kangaroo.
The cast also includes 80 chorus members. They will appear as Who families, as well as Jungle Creatures, Fish, and Cadets.
The Otsego production will be directed by choral director Janine Baughman, with Madge Brown and Will Baughman as assistant directors. Garrett Leininger is student teacher/director.
The March 21-23 shows begin at 8 p.m. and the March 24 matinee will begin at 3 p.m.
Tickets are $10 for adults, and $8 for students and senior citizens. Tickets can be purchased in the high school office, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
