KANSAS - Becky Heimlich was greeted with flowers and a gift at her last board meeting for the Lakota School District Monday night. After six years as superintendent, Heimlich will turn over the reigns of Lakota Schools to new-hire Dave Danhoff, superintendent at Willard schools. He will take over for Heimlich Aug. 1. "All I can say is, you left us a lot better now than what we started," said Lakota board president Chris Chalfin. The highlight of her term was helping plan, and find a way to fund, a new, centralized pre-kindergarten through 12th grade building for the district. Heimlich was instrumental in garnering community support, and funds, for the school. A levy to pay for its construction passed the first try. Before becoming superintendent Heimlich was the elementary school principal. The board presented Heimlich with a lifetime, paid membership for both her and a guest to all of the Lakota sporting events. Heimlich expressed gratitude for the gifts, and for the board. "It's been a fun ride here at Lakota," Heimlich said. "We've accomplished quite a bit. ... It's been a great experience and I thank the board because this building wouldn't be here without you. Don't ever forget that. Your names are out there too." The board is also in the process of reviewing two district policies: bullying, and student abuse and neglect, but no discussion took place Monday. Chalfin said the board is reviewing the policies to see if changes are necessary, but no changes have been made. In January, a Lakota bus driver was found not guilty in Wood County of endangering children after a Risingsun boy was assaulted by other children on her bus last year. |
