MILLBURY - Lake Middle School's quiz bowl team has returned from Washington, D.C., where it competed in the National Academic Championship, May 31 to June 2.
There the team played against schools from all over the United States and made it into the finals, finishing in the top 10 in the country.
There were 42 teams in the competition. Lake made it to the top 10 then lost its first round, said Coach Nikki Bazzoli.
"The team had a blast," said Bazzoli. Only two of the team members had been to the capital before.
Team members that went on the trip included Tim Recker, Andrew Whitmore, Nick Chiappetta, Nathan Banky, Parker Lake, Alyx Fisher, Emily Lovell and Abi Lovell.
Only one of the team's nine students will return next year to the middle school team.
"We're going to be in a rebuilding year," Bazzoli said.
"We were really appreciative to have the opportunity to go with the support of people in the community as well as the district," she added.
Among the many individual significant donations local companies made to help fund the trip came from Lubrizol, Eagleview Logistics Corporation, Seagate Plastics, North Star Bluescope Steel, CH Asset Management, Mel-O-Creme and Chick-Fil-A.
The team qualified to go to the national competition by placing third in a state event held in April at John Carroll University near Cleveland.
