Katherine Brown of Perrysburg was recognized at the 2014 Wittenberg University Honors Convocation for
induction into an honor society in the academic disciplines.
She was inducted into Alpha Kappa Delta. Alpha Kappa Delta seeks to acknowledge and promote excellence in
scholarship in the study of sociology, the research of social problems, and such other social and
intellectual activities as will lead to improvement in the human condition. Academically accomplished
sociology majors and minors are invited to join Wittenberg’s Sigma of Ohio Chapter.
Wittenberg University celebrated the achievements of students and faculty members at the annual Honors
Convocation.
Madeline Petee of Perrysburg was inducted into Mortar Board, a national senior honorary recognizing
scholarship, leadership and service. Candidates must have a 3.3 grade point average and excel in both
curricular and cocurricular leadership and service to the Wittenberg community.
She was also inducted into Omicron Delta Kappa, a national senior leadership honor society recognizing
leadership in scholarship, athletics, university publications, cultural life and student affairs
Defiance College held its annual Honors Day Convocation recently to recognize academic achievements of
students.
The Dr. Clarence Gilham Endowed Scholar-ship was presented to Philip Balla, Rossford. This scholarship
was created by Dr. Gilham to honor the work of Richard Howard, professor emeritus, who served as a
member of the Defiance College Christian Education faculty from 1967 to 1990. It is awarded to a
full-time undergraduate student preparing to enter Christian ministry or graduate studies in history, or
biblical studies.
Students at the Univer-sity of Findlay recently participated in the annual Symposium for Scholarship and
Creativity. Under-graduate and graduate students were given the opportunity to share their research,
creativity and professional learning experiences with the University and community. More than 300
students participated.
Local students included: Morgan Arnold of Bloomdale, Macey Brandeberry of Fostoria, Rachel Durst of
Bloom-dale, Shaun Fox of Bowling Green, Emily Garbig of Perrysburg, Megan Grilliot of North Baltimore,
Joseph Hunter of Perrysburg, Colin McKibben of Portage, Nathan Meek of Bloom-dale, Morgan Pilz of
Perrysburg, Kacie Pohlman of Fostoria, Emily Reynolds of Wayne, Miranda Rife of Fostoria, Hope Tebbe of
Bowling Green and Sarah Wilson of Rossford.
As culmination of their Honors Program study, 20 Heidelberg University students presented their capstone
research projects. Among the local students who presented were:
Danielle Pike of Bowl-ing Green, Psychology and the Military: Historical and Clinical Connections.
Felicia Konrad of North Baltimore, The History of Women’s Clothing in England.
Jennifer Simko of Millbury, Forgiveness is an Act of Will: Surviving Japanese Atrocities During World War
II.
Each Honors student, during the senior year, works with a faculty mentor to complete a capstone project
that derives from their major field. The research project is designed to individualize and deepen their
understanding of a topic of compelling interest in his/her major.
