PERRYSBURG - Jody Germann, of Bowling Green, has been recognized with the 2013 Penta Career Center Teacher of the Year award.
Germann, an instructor of Landscape & Turfgrass Management, was recognized in May during a special all staff meeting at Penta.
He was nominated by his fellow peers for his contributions to the mission of career-technical education and for his dedication to his students.
He has been an instructor at Penta since 2005.
Germann has a very simple educational philosophy. "Every student has a passion, and as educators, we need to help students find their passion and motivate them to learn as much about it as they can," says Germann. "In my class I try to expose the students to many aspects of the landscape and turfgrass industry so they find their passion and learn what great opportunities are available to them."
He teaches Landscape I and II, and averages around 20 to 25 students each year.
"We do have kids that go out on job placement. They'll work on any facet of the industry."
Last year, he had a student with his own landscape business, plus others who worked at area nurseries, country clubs and for the Mud Hens.
He said he presents students "numerous opportunities to find what they're interested in to make a career of it."
The 1988 Bowling Green High School graduate said the award "is flattering and very humbling."
His family is a big part of his work at Penta. Wife Tricia "gets drug around a lot of places because of what I do."
Germann is an active member of FFA. He has earned both the State FFA Degree in 1987 and the American FFA Degree in 1990. He has earned master certification through the Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association.
Germann has an associate degree in applied science in landscape management and greenhouse operations/management from the Agriculture Technical Institute at the Ohio State University, graduating in 1991.
He also has a bachelor's degree in career and technical education from the University of Toledo (2006) and earned a master's degree in mild to moderate special education from Bowling Green State University (2011).
He also owns Germann Landscaping Services in Bowling Green.
