BG schools turn recycled juice pouches into money

Two Bowling Green schools are "going green" with juice box collections.
For several months, students at Montessori School of Bowling Green and Rainbow Cooperative Preschool have
been collecting normally non-recyclable drink pouches to prevent them from going to landfills and also
to raise money for their schools.
Instead of becoming waste, the pouches are turned into eco-friendly gardening products through the
TerraCycle program. These products are sold at various retailers.
In turn for collecting the items, TerraCycle, a company aimed at eliminating the idea of waste, pays 2
cents to the schools for each pouch.
At Rainbow Cooperative, students have collected 4,000 juice pouches, according to Belva Kallenbach,
teacher/administrator.
As a result, students were able to raise about $300 for the school.
The executive board will decide how to use the money, but Kallenbach said it may be put toward a new
computer or toys.
Students at Montessori School of Bowling Green have collected about 1,000 pouches, according to Jessica
Hover, associate director.
Participating in the program, Hover said, fits in well with the school’s environmental education.
"We do try to do a lot of environmental education, recycling and citizenship lessons," Hover
said.
The school began participating in the program after a student brought up the idea.
