A research-based, nationally recognized, proven-effective parenting program for the Bowling Green Area
Schools is set for this month.
This class has been approved by the board of education and is provided through the Safe Schools Healthy
Students initiative.
Guiding Good Choices will begin Tuesday and will be held at Conneaut Elementary from 6:30 to 8 p.m.
The class is for parents concerned that as your child grows up and eventually heads for middle school or
high school he/she will be overwhelmed and not make wise decisions.
Guiding Good Choices is the premier drug prevention program for parents of children ages 9-14.
This program gives parents the skills they need to help reduce or prevent substance abuse and other
potential problem behaviors in their children.
The primary purpose of the series is to build a strong foundation for the family unit and for parents to
make their family and their home a secure, safe, and stable place for all family members.
Research demonstrates that children who have strong relationships with their parents develop better
social and emotional competencies; skills which in turn help them succeed in school and make healthier
life choices.
Guiding Good Choices emphasizes that one of the key elements to building a strong supportive family unit
is to establish firm boundaries and expectations for children. This program encourages parents to set
clear guidelines for their children in order to develop healthy beliefs and standards. This foundation
will in turn provide children with the ability to refuse and resist when confronted with potential
adolescent problem behaviors.
All families have times of conflict, disagreements and negative interactions. Guiding Good Choices
provides common sense suggestions and strategies to deal with these issues in a positive way before they
spiral out of control, causing family bonds and relationships to weaken.
