Joe Allen has been named this year’s Linette Butler Award recipient as an exemplary quiz bowl member.
Allen, a member of the Bowling Green Christian Academy quiz bowl team, accepted the honor at Tuesday’s
Wood County Educational Service Center governing board meeting.
The award is in memory of Linette, a former member of the Christian Academy’s team who "personified
the mission of the quiz bowl program." The award was named in her honor as she was "a
dedicated and competitive player who displayed strong leadership skills and courage throughout her
battle with her illness."
Each junior high quiz bowl coach was asked to nominate one participant from their team, with a special
selection team from the ESC reviewing the nominations.
Allen was nominated by team coach Sue Larimer.
In her recommendation, she wrote that his nomination was "based on the following characteristics:
spirit of competition, attitude of respect, leadership skills, commitment and dedication, passion for
quiz bowl, and being a team member."
Allen started quiz bowl in fifth grade, and has been the first at practice and the last to leave.
Larimer said "he was her ‘idea guy,’ and brought apps to play, suggested different formats for
practice, and assisted in organization, clean up, and encouragement of others."
Linette’s mother, Deb Butler, assisted with the plaque presentation.
