Got an apple pie craving?

Nothing says America, and stirs those leftover Fourth of July feelings, like a hearty slice of apple pie.

But who wants to turn on the oven in the summer?
Lily Parker-McLaughlin, an 11-year-old from Wayne, has an answer for an apple pie craving.
Her "Apple Pie Yogurt in a Mug" recipe was unanimously selected as the winner of the first 2014
Farm Fresh Recipe contest of the Bowling Green Farmers’ Market.
"It’s a great, easy recipe that combines healthy, wholesome ingredients," said contest judge
Mat Manley, director of operations at Heritage Corner Health Care Campus.
Lily said she came up with the Apple Pie Yogurt recipe on a lark, jotted it down and submitted it for the
contest. She did try it out on grandma Sandy Parker, too.
She’s been whipping up batches of the mugs for her cousins who have gathered from across the country to
attend the funeral of her other grandmother, Kathleen McLaughlin, who died last week.
"I think it’s because apple pies, you have to bake and stuff. But this you don’t have too,"
Lily said of the recipe’s popularity.
Around her house, which is out in the country, Lily concocts all kinds of creations from berry patches
and a herb garden in the yard.
"I just know what fits together," she said, adding that she has a penchant for smoothies.
The family also uses a lot of honey, which was a featured ingredient in the Farmers’ Market contest. They
have a beehive, which provides a natural source of the sweet stuff.
"There’s a lot of people who really believe that local honey helps their allergies," said Penny
Parker, Lily’s mother. "It is something that we do always have around. … Anything you can grow or
make yourself makes it automatically better."

The family also owns chickens and has 25 dairy goats. "We raise pigs now, so we have our own
meat," Parker said.
Their pets include two miniature horses, a horse, two miniature donkeys, numerous cats and dogs, three
goldfish, two guinea pigs an a duck.
Lily is a member of Black Swamp Trailblazers, a 4-H club started by her mom. She plans to enter some
recipes and animals in the Wood County Fair.
She will be in seventh grade at Elmwood Middle School, where she enjoys art and science classes. She also
likes basketball and softball and wants to take dance classes.
Her daughter has always loved exotic tastes, Parker said. She would suck lemons as a toddler. During a
visit to El Zarape at 18-months-old, Lily slurped down a bowl of salsa before anyone could stop her.
Lily didn’t come by cooking through her mother.
"I hate the kitchen. I hate cooking. I hate baking. I avoid the kitchen like a plague. I would
rather clean a bathroom," Parker said.
Parker’s husband, David Shaffer, does most of the cooking.
Lily also likes to cook for her dad, Tom McLaughlin, and sister, Bryn.
"I bake cakes a lot," Lily said. "My most recent one was a Hobbit cake and I did one for
my nephew’s first birthday."
The Hobbit cake featured an elaborate cave, colored in green, with chocolate "stone" steps
leading to it.
"Her main thing is decorating cakes. She’s super into it," her mom said.
And she’s a "Dr. Who" nut. Her 12th birthday party this week will be themed around the British
science-fiction television program. She’s going to serve cinnamon sticks and frosting – instead of fish
sticks and custard – to her guests.
"Everybody says it’s confusing but I follow it better than most people. I have a large mind,"
Lily said.
Other entries in the Farmers’ Market contest included Candice Hoyt’s recipe for Lemon Blackberry Cupcakes
and Becky White Schooner’s recipe for Ancho Chili Infused Honey.
Both of those recipes will be available on the recipe section of the Downtown Farmers Market pages at
www.downtownbgohio.org.
