Legion of Merit awarded Lt. Col. Robert Conrad at his April 5 retirement dinner from U.S. Army

Lt. Robert L. Conrad received the Legion of Merit at a retirement dinner April 5.
Conrad, a graduate of Bowling Green State University and Bowling Green High School (1984) will officially
retire from the U.S. Army this summer.
He has been on active duty since 1989.
He is the son of Richard and Joan Dickerson Conrad, of Bowling Green.
The Legion of Merit is one of two medals that can be worn around the neck, the other being the
Congressional Medal of Honor.
Conrad was honored for "exceptionally meritorious service at the Deputy Chief of Targeting Army
Operations and Integration Center." The citation commends Conrad for "oustanding leadership,
extraordinary expertise and consummate professionalism while overseeing defensive operations across all
Army centers."
Conrad received a bachelor’s degree from BGSU in 1988 and master’s degree in 1989. He was commissioned as
a second lieutenant from BGSU’s Army ROTC program after completeing his bachelor’s degree in 1988.
He went on active duty after completing his master’s degree.
He graduated from Army Ranger School in 1992, a program which about 27 percent of participants
successfully complete.
Conrad has been stationed at Fort Irwin, Calif.; Fort Huachuca, Ariz,; Fort Benning, Ga.; Fort Myer, Va.;
the Pentagon, numerous tours at Fort Belvoir, Va.; spent one year at the DMZ in Korea and one year in
Iraq.
Conrad was in the Pentagon building on Sept. 11, 2001, and was promoted to major in November 2001 in the
Pentagon auditorium.
He is married to Janiet Bielak and has three children, Michael, a sophomore at BGSU, and Christina and
Daniel.
