PERRYSBURG – Fort Meigs will host its "First Siege 1813" event throughout Memorial Day weekend,
featuring recreated battles, musket and artillery demonstrations, and camp life demonstrations.
Attendees will be able to tour American and British military encampments and watch musket and cannon
firing demonstrations, and explore a Woodland Indian encampment to learn about the Ohio Shawnee.
Hands-on activities will also be offered all weekend long, including washing clothes 1812-style,
enlisting in the mini-militia and learning how to drill like a War of 1812 soldier.
Returning this year is "1813 Patrol" and a ladies tea. All ladies are invited to attend the tea
and learn more about 1812-era food and crafts. With the "1813 Patrol," attendees can accompany
a squad of American soldiers on patrol as they look for the enemy.
On Memorial Day, attendees may join the staff and volunteers at Fort Meigs in honoring the men and women
of our armed forces. War of 1812 soldier and civilian re-enactors will demonstrate camp life throughout
the day. A wreath-laying ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. in front of the monument within the fort. The
ceremony ends with a wreath-laying and musket firing at the Pennsylvania monument.
Fort Meigs is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday and from noon to 5 p.m. on Memorial
Day. Event admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $5 for children ages 6 to 18, and $1 for OHS
members. Children 5 and under will be admitted free. Veterans get free admission to the site on Monday.
