To the Editor: Weston man opposes 'Obamacare' brutus 2009-09-08 08:36:54 OK Hmmmmm, useyourhead, Wil. Which one we talking to today? Pretty sad you feel so hateful towards other people and don't want them to have Healthcare. Is it that lonely in your parents basement. Seriously seek some professional help. Health care reform supporters visit Latta's office brutus 2009-09-08 08:43:31 You really have some identity problems. Try to work those issues out first before you come back on and spread your misinformation. People deperately need Healthcare. Take care useyourhead, Hmmmm, Wil or whichever one you are today.

Schools deal with hype around speech brutus 2009-09-08 14:40:30 Wonderfull speech. I think school boards and Supt. should be held accountable and to why they did not show this. And since they went this route no public speakers should be allowed to address our children. This would include Randy Gardner and Bob Latta. So go to your board of education meetings and have the board members and Supt. go on record and include it in the meeting minutes as to why the speech wasn't televised. It is time to take our country back from these right wing religious fanactics.
To the Editor: Can we afford this Otsego project? Togany Resident 2009-09-08 15:14:13 It's funny that I haven't heard that sucking sound as the Tontogany kids have left town for years to go to school in Weston,Haskins, and Grand Rapids. Come to think of it, our youth orginizations(baseball, softball, scouts, etc.)haven't suffered either. That's a pretty lame argument.
To the Editor: Urges signing petition against BG ordinance brutus 2009-09-08 17:36:30 Lot of pent up anger there bg voter or is it gb voter? Why do you right wing nuts always question someone ability to think? Just because they don't think like you doesn't mean they don't think. Follow the laws and bingo you won't have a problem. And what is so hard to understand about what Jeff said?
To the Editor: Urges signing petition against BG ordinance bg voter 2009-09-08 18:14:20 Jeff's comment, "You don't have to hire them either." (speaking of gay people)With the new ordinance, if you don't, then the potential employer could be accused of discrimination. Am I right or wrong here? Do you really agree with creed being a protected group? I guess the reason I question a persons ability to think, is mainly because there are people like you in this world. Have a nice day.
To the Editor: Can we afford this Otsego project? OTres 2009-09-08 19:02:21 Togany Resident, Lame, you have had the high school and the largest of the payrolls for years. You can now have everything you believe you deserve. The problem you will have is the number of voters to support your new dynasty. Hope you enjoy as much as we will in the rest of the communities now that you have made your statement. We will see how it works in the coming months when the true reality sets in with the voters. Hopefully the smug attitude of the board and Togany residents does not continue.
Schools deal with hype around speech useyourhead 2009-09-08 19:36:50 brutus, did you read the article?? If the school had the technology, then kids were able to watch it. If they didn't want to or their parents didn't want them to, then other arrangments were made. I can't believe we both agree that it should be made available to the kids. It was. To say it wasn't is wrong. Right wing religious fanatics. hahahaha That is paranoia.
To the Editor: Weston man opposes 'Obamacare' hmmm 2009-09-08 19:44:01 Yes 5 out of 4. It's a joke and an old one at that. Are you really that uptight? Your life must be sad.
Schools deal with hype around speech enough 2009-09-08 20:09:17 There is no reason why a school would refuse to show this. Saying the technology wasn't available is not correct. How many kids watched Obama get sworn in? This could have been shown via the web and in fact schools had the abiltiy to tape the speech and show in later in the day or week? Otsego would much rather show sportscenter full of commericals during lunch than the president? What was so objectable about the speech to parents? There were boy scouts in the schools last week thumping for members and numerous groups trying to convince the kids to sell junk. What is the DARE program and why isn't it allowed. I agree with that if you can't allow the president to enourage kids to be responsible , stay in school, listen then what public speakers are ok? Also what accomadations were made for parents who wanted their kids to watch the speech?
Portage gives up traffic light kamdan 2009-09-09 06:37:58 I find this sad. I come through Portage on a regular basis. It doesn't take me but an extra 60 seconds or so to go the speed limit and even stop at the red light. I think ODOT made a mistake on this one. I'm not entirely sure of the circumstances surrounding the red light issue, but small towns need slow speed limits. I wish you safety in the coming months Portage.
To the Editor: Who did judge, prosecutor protect? Me Too 2009-09-09 07:00:11 Mr. LaRoe, I know what you mean! Monica sucks at her job. Victim Assistance, yeah right. When the county needs to start cutting back they need to start here.
Portage gives up traffic light Mark Foster 2009-09-09 07:13:30 Thank god, it's about time!!! I can't tell you the # of times I've sat at that light and NEVER had a car come from East/West. It will be nice to drive through there at 5am and not have to waste my time at that stupid useless light. Also going to be a lot less speeding tickets for you losers, the town was setup to be a speed trap. Where is does it go from 55-50-35-25 all within a quarter mile!!!! GOOD RIDDANCE
To the Editor: BG man responds to doctor's letter on gays jerry 2009-09-09 07:18:11 Don't you go hatin' on Barry Manilow, Russ. Barry is DA MAN! I agree with you on Yanni, though.
To the Editor: Urges signing petition against BG ordinance BG voter 2009-09-09 07:26:59 Dr. Miller is correct. Yes, I signed the petition to put the issue on the ballot. The ordance will hurt home values, be a bad influence on children, and drive up lawsuit costs for the city.
Portage gives up traffic light larry ferguson 2009-09-09 08:13:51 I can't see their problem with the missing light for cars crossing 25, they are going to have the cross walk light for the handicaped wheel chairs and any person going to the post office. Students going to catch the bus will also have a light to cross. As for the speed limit I never could see 25 mph for about 100 feet. The amount of traffic on 25 any more really doesn't matter if it's one lane or two through portage. If it wasn't for the speed trap that portage was always known for I doubt if there is enough crime in portage to warrent a police force.
Portage gives up traffic light Mark foster 2009-09-09 09:49:36 Yeah, you can see what a true asset the police for is, just look at Maas Bros. having all of their tires cut again!! The police are there for a speed trap, nothing else, if they were then they would be patrolling, not staring at the street talking on their cell phones!!
Schools deal with hype around speech brutus 2009-09-09 09:51:14 Ahh useyourhead as I have pointed out in the past you have comprehenion issues. Do you get bored reading more than a sentence in a story? Anyhow if you knew anything about the schools you would know they have these newfangled things called monitors in almost every class. They use the monitors as teaching aids. The monitors have a feature which will allow webcasts. They could have fed the speech via these monitors. Hopefully you understand that. And the Perrysburg district gave limited access. Limited. You did not need cable to view this. Bottom line every classroom could have shown the address either by monitors or even a more newfangled thing called a notebook computer. Wow really tuff to do. I will stop here so you can soak it in. Bottom line also is we know why is was not shown. That guy in the Whitehouse. Don't know how he got there, oh yes I do he was elected last November. Imagine that.
To the Editor: BG man responds to doctor's letter on gays brutus 2009-09-09 10:01:33 You had me going there for a minute Russ. Ever since the Medical doctors decided they were also psychiatrists and started dispensing Prozac and other mind drugs they now think their opinion matters too. Dr. Miller when are you going to patent your anti-gay vaccine?
To the Editor: Urges signing petition against BG ordinance brutus 2009-09-09 10:17:57 Let me break that down for you. You don't have to like gay people. You don't have to hire gay people. Pay attention here, he means you don't have to hire him just because he is gay, if he can't do the job, he can't do the job. OK now the tricky part, if he is qualified to do the job you can't refuse to hire because he is gay. Comprende? And if you would have read on about the definition of creed you would have read that creed and religon are often put together. It can also include a person politcal belief. It was included to cover all the bases so when someone discrimnates they can't use this as an out.
Schools deal with hype around speech useyourhead 2009-09-09 10:34:11 My bad. I guess when the principals or the superintendents said they dont't have the technology to show everyone, I should of assumed they were lying. I should of known that you know more than they do. I do not know the capabilities of every school district in regards to their viewing access. Those darn right wing religious fanactics. Always trying to keep us in the dark. Here's a thought, correct me if I am wrong. Record it at home if you really wanted your kids to see it. I'm pretty sure it can be viewed online somewhere as well, or did the right wing religious fanatics destroy the broadcast to never be viewed again? Being paranoid must be a horrible way to live life.

To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice useyourhead 2009-09-09 12:16:25 Ummm, we live in a democracy? The United States is a Rebublic. I have heard arguments that say, if one person is discriminated against, then that is one too many. Would that same argument apply to, if one person is wrongly accused of discrimintaion, then that is one too many?
Schools deal with hype around speech AJ Dukes 2009-09-09 12:29:05 useyourhead is 100% correct. This should have been a household decision, not a public school issue. Brutus get a life. I guarantee that you have a very limited education based on your arguments ALWAYS turning to "you're an idiot, you have no comprehension, you don't follow the democrat party line, so therefore you are wrong!" Quite the opposite, the people that disagree with you are for the most part dead nut on the money! You couldn't make the middle school debate team I'm afraid because they do not tolerate name calling as a retort. Go back to Grade school and complete the 3rd're quite the bore!
To the Editor: Urges signing petition against BG ordinance bg voter 2009-09-09 12:35:59 3 qualified people apply for the same job. 2 of the people can claim they didn't get hired because of their creed. Creed can mean religious and or political beliefs. It can also mean about anything else. Is that too hard to understand? Creed alone is too vague. It can mean anything. Nice law. Everyone is protected, except the person who owns a business or owns a building. Did you know that employess of the City of Bowling Green have to cover up a tattoo. Is that discrimination?
To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice brutus 2009-09-09 12:45:48 Stop with the Republic thing, and I spelled it correctly. People are referring to the way we do our elections and the way people are elected to either uphold current law or make new. And I hate to say this but I agree about the 2nd part of what you said. And if you really want to get technical it is a Democratic-Republic. Ahh, children. And to the Coates I agree with everything you said.
To the Editor: Weston man opposes 'Obamacare' brutus 2009-09-09 12:55:01 By the way the WSJ poll I was referring to was in June before you and your crazy right wing nuts started talking about "death panels" and pulling the plug on granny. You know before the fear and smear campaign you and your teabaggin friends did. And it was before they changed the questioning in their latest poll to more fit their Rupert Murdoch thinking. He owns both the WSJ and Faux entertainment.
Schools deal with hype around speech enough 2009-09-09 13:18:01 Degrading someone and implying they are stupid and then faulting the way they express their opinions? ENOUGH!!! Schools could have shown this had they chosen to and it is a fact. The President of the United States gives a speech directed at school children that encourages them to listen to their teachers, stay in school, take responsibilty for their own learning, and that working hard and getting an education can help you be successful later in life. This is a message a local school district chose not share with their kids, but by golly Sports Center was allowed to be broadcast and is everyday in one high school? Brutus was correct in that most districts did have a means of showing this, but honestly didn't want to deal with fall out of parents who made assumptions about the speech and it's message, with no facts to back them up. A lot of these districts showed the President getting sworn into office, but wont show him addressing students on an important issue? ENOUGH!!!
Schools deal with hype around speech brutus 2009-09-09 13:18:09 Is that David Dukes writng? Sounds like it. Just because the majority of the people don't want to go back to the stone age like you? Yeah why would we want the President telling our students to stay in school and do well so they don't end up like some of their parents? You know ones that can't read more than 2 words in a sentence, think the world is flat, think the sun revolves around the earth, don't believe in evolution, even though they are the perfect example. Heaven forbid if the next generation actually did their research and didn't listen to the Palins and DeMints of the world. The truth is boring to people like you and useyourhead, doesn't fit your thinking. I deal in realities, not what ifs. And useyourhead school boards wanting to teach our kids abstinence only programs and creationism is not being paranoid. Those things are good for church not public schools. I know you guys hate science because it is real and once again doesn't fit your thinking.
To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice useyourhead 2009-09-09 13:24:30 Stop with the Republic thing!?!?!? WOW!! Let's just forget what the Framers of the Constitution intended. A republic, is a system in which the people choose representatives who, in turn, make policy decisions on their behalf. Isn't that what city council did? I don't remember voting on this ordinance. brutus, you are truly an amazing person. You have the ability to translate what other people think.
To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice Marlene 2009-09-09 13:53:39 UYH -- Once again, we need to mention the fact that civil rights are something to be made on the legislative and judicial side -- they are NOT to be voted on by flawed and prejudiced people! As you may remember at one of the prior city council meetings, a lady from Tennessee said that if Jim Crow were up for a vote in the south there would *still* be areas where segregation would still hold sway! And once again, dear... may I remind you that these new ordinances protects YOU too!
To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice useyourhead 2009-09-09 14:44:43 Marlene, you just called the voters flawed and prejudice. Are these the same voters that voted for Obama? For someone who is for equal rights, your continuous use of the words dear and darling are a bit hypocritical.
Schools deal with hype around speech useyourhead 2009-09-09 15:06:26 brutus, I don't know what to say. That last rant of yours was really off the wall. Good luck with all of that.
John Newby Dana Burley 2009-09-09 15:23:13 I send my condolences to John's family. I went to high school with John. He was s such a nice guy in high school and I really enjoyed talking to him at our 30 year reunion in 2000. I am greatly saddened by his passing.
Schools deal with hype around speech enough 2009-09-09 15:46:12 What is off the wall is a group of people constantly stirring up controversity based on idealogy and not facts. When confronted with the facts, they simply ignore them and go on creating more drama. They dont aim to solve any problems facing this country. When confronted with the facts they laugh it off and claim they were so concerned about???? What they are concerned about is not getting the spotlight on tv or radio to advance a personality to sell their books or get people to pay lots to hear them speak, or to exploit people to show up and rally around them, not their country which could use some attention. It is getting to be down right silly. Use your head is a good mantra, but it only works and can be effective if you actually have brains inside it capable of thinking for itself and like you have to you be able to reason and understand logic and well gee see the world from other viewpoints bysides being a drone of the rightwing muckrakers.
Portage gives up traffic light Twiggy 2009-09-09 16:00:10 Now Portage can join the ranks of other small villages. Custar for one has a major highway, ST 281, and there is no traffic lights their either. Only difference is the kids have to cross the highway to catch the school bus and they don't even have a crossing light of any kind. Also, the bank is on the south side of the highway and people have to cross the road if they wish to bank there. This also affects the handicap. Add that all together that Custar doesn't have a police department. Sorry Portage, you are not the first nor will you be the last.
To the Editor: Can we afford this Otsego project? enough 2009-09-09 16:10:12 About 80 kids ever walked to each of the elementary schools and parents of kids in the country heard sucking and groaning sounds for decades as their kids were forced to endure long bus rides every school day and I dont recall the residents of Weston,Haskins or GR being interested at all. Also, whatever new blood that gets on the board needs to understand the difference of state mandates and the federal loan program Otsego partcipated in. It is the STATE that is forcing the mandates on all the schools in Ohio, not just ones that took the "free" money. It has been estimated that it will cost Cleveland City Schools 1 billion to comply with the new state mandates. Mr. Dawson can you please supply the list of other school districts that refused to apply for this money or wouldnt take it when offered? 2 other school districts in the county also got "free" money and they aren't very parnoid about all the strings that came with it. What do you know that they don't? I personally hope to Lisa Hatfield's face when the first group of Otsego students walk down the halls of the new school with smiling faces and with the stability of knowing where they are to going to school at for the next 6 years.
John Newby Gregg Shaffer 2009-09-09 16:16:12 Mrs. Newby, Jennifer, Bill and Tom, and family, you have our heartfelt condolences in this time of sorrow. John and I were very good friends since grade school. I remember playing at his house with his dog pulling us on a scooter, always trying to be on the same recess football team after lunch, and hanging out at HS dances after games. We used to watch his brother Bill play varsity basketball when we were younger and rehashed the BGSU-TU BB games the next day every year; we played together 5th grade through varsity. Everyone liked John. My younger brothers liked him and his animated playground basketball persona of "the Sheik" entertained them (and his teammates and classmates). We will miss seeing him at our 40th reunion next year. Jennifer, everyone like your Dad. He was a lot of fun, a good athlete and a devoted friend. John 11:25-27

To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice brutus 2009-09-09 16:49:12 OK easy one here for you useyourhead. Are our representatives democratically elected? Yes or No. Just out of curiosity did you get past the 1st line which was stop the republic thing? I will answer that for you. NO!!!! As usual you pick up on catch words and don't comprehend what I said. It has to be embarrassing. See if you were in school and the President told you when you failed reading comprehension to try harder. You would not be having the problems you are having now. Democractic-Republic. The only reason the founders called it a Republic is because they wanted to break away from the European term Representative democracy. See I just gave you a free history lesson.
Schools deal with hype around speech useyourhead 2009-09-09 16:51:36 enough, what did you say earlier about "Degrading someone and implying they are stupid and then faulting the way they express their opinions?" I guess that only applies to others and not yourself. Apparently you and brutus know more about the technologies of the school districts than the principals or the superintendents. Some were able to watch it while others taped it to be viewed at a later date. As far as one distict watching ESPN, that in my opinion, is wrong on a daily basis. I'm pretty sure I said, I agree with the kids being able to view Obama's speach. Not sure where the "spotlight on tv or radio to advance a personality to sell their books" came into play. I thought this was a discussion about Obama's broadcast. If you reread the article, it states what I have just stated. I guess you don't see them as facts. Maybe you and brutus would be so kind to go to the school districts and show them how to set it up where every class room in every district can show a broadcast. Like I said earlier, I don't know if that can be done. I took the work of the principals and the superintendents. I do believe the world is round and the 8 major planets revolve around the sun. Rightwing muckrakers, rebublicants, Right wing religious fanatics. Im sure the two of you have more childish names in store. Good day.

To the Editor: Urges signing petition against BG ordinance brutus 2009-09-09 18:18:16 My bad bg voter. I thought you could see reason. My mistake, you are cynical and can't get past your own ideology. Have fun.
Portage gives up traffic light neighbor 2009-09-09 18:47:33 I understand the concerns of Portage residents, but come on, do you really think there will be any problems? Just shift the speed enforcement cop to watch the crosswalk in the mornings or afternoons for the kids crossing the route to catch their bus. My big question is: Once the pedestrian crosswalk button is pushed, how long will the yellow caution lights blink? For some of the elderly, I wonder if they'll blink for enough time for them to cross.
To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice useyourhead 2009-09-09 19:20:33 I wrote. A republic, is a system in which the people choose representatives who, in turn, make policy decisions on their behalf. THE PEOPLE CHOOSE REPRESENTATIVES. Please note that is part of a republic. The letter that Kimberly and Lawrence Coates stated we live in a democracy. When in fact we live in a republic. If it were a democracy, then the people would of voted on the ordinance. Heres one for you. A Jeep was made with parts from Ford, it's not a Ford/Jeep, it's still a Jeep. And to answer your question, did you get past the 1st line which was stop the republic thing? If you read my comment, you will see the answer is yes. I said you are truly an amazing person. You have the ability to translate what other people think. Apparently you didn't read all of my post. Good day.

Schools deal with hype around speech useyourhead 2009-09-09 19:47:06 The controversy over President Obama's speech to the nation's schoolchildren will likely be over shortly after Obama speaks. But when President George H.W. Bush delivered a similar speech on October 1, 1991, from Alice Deal Junior High School in Washington DC, the controversy was just beginning. Democrats, then the majority party in Congress, not only denounced Bush's speech -- they also ordered the General Accounting Office to investigate its production and later summoned top Bush administration officials to Capitol Hill for an extensive hearing on the issue. Lost in all the denouncing and investigating was the fact that Bush's speech itself, like Obama's speach, was entirely unremarkable. Yeah, it's all about the Right wing religious fanatics. hahahaha
To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice brutus 2009-09-09 19:58:39 Once again if you would have gone a little further in your Wiki search you would have seen a republic is a representive democracy. You are both right. But boy you are such a petty person drawing straws. Stick with the issues and the intent of the writer. If you want someone to attack, attack me. Don't try to read something sinister in what someone else says. They are not a gutter dwellers like you. And the flawed and prejudiced ones voted Repug.
Schools deal with hype around speech brutus 2009-09-09 20:13:25 Why didn't you print what Bush sr. said. Once again you go halfway there and quit. Why? And I agree it is petty what the Dems did about the production and hearing thing. Bush's speech actually was indoctrinating the children, but I did not look at it like that back then. I thought is was good for the Pres to speak to kids. And actually the reporter should have called them out on the technicality thing. A good reporter would have and found out the real reason they did not show it.
To the Editor: Urges signing petition against BG ordinance brutus 2009-09-09 20:25:20 I am not here to answer your questions. Get mommy and daddy to do that. I am here to refute yours lies and misinformation.
To the Editor: BG council praised for opposing injustice useyourhead 2009-09-09 21:20:18 Wiki? No. The original letter stated we live in a democracy. My response wasn't an attack. It was a correction. And of all people saying dont read something sinister in what someone else says, you have absoulutly no room to talk. Im a "gutter dweller"? You have no idea. I'm not going down to your level. It's childish and you should be embarrassed for such a generalization. Calling everyone who is a republican flawed and prejudice, is another generalization, and again childish. brutus, there is nothing wrong with debate or heated arguments about a topic people are passionate about. You have stooped to a new low. My original comment was to Kimberly and Lawrence Coates. There was nothing degrading in my words. It appears you know Kimberly and Lawrence and feel a need to speak for them. One of my other comments was made to Marlene. Again, you feel a need to speak for her with another childish response calling republicans repugs. brutus, I sincerely hope when you read your words, you understand that calling someone, anyone, a gutter dweller is uncalled for. I will no longer debate, argue or communicate with you in any regards.

It is also incredible to me that there are those out there whose political agendas mean more to them than the welfare of all Americans. I feel that this is also a moral issue for all believers who seek to help their fellow man. We should all be doing our utmost to support and help in the development of health care reform while we have this opportunity before it gets compromised away to mere good intentions without any substance.

Portage gives up traffic light concernedcitizen 2009-09-10 05:25:41 as to the maas bros tire slashing our officers hours had been cut and no one was on duty for almost 48 hours in the stretch that the incident happened. and the people who call portage a speed trap i am confused what is a trap? laying in wait to catch someone that is doing something illegal such as speeding! follow the speed and you will not get a ticket. i am so sick of people calling us a trap were you there when Mrs. Bassett was killed by a semi who could not stop at the red light where you there when the hall boy was delivering the paper and was hit by a speeder, probably not. foster I can not call you Mr. because you have not earned any respect from me. you are an angry person and must have a vendetta for the town, i hope you can live with yourself when something happens in town and we know it will. i feel very sorry for you as you are a very unhappy man.
Schools deal with hype around speech Enough 2009-09-10 06:09:14 Parents didn't call in and inquire if schools would be showing Bush's speech, nor did the rightwing muckrakers object to Bush speaking to school kids. The drama came after the event by a few people in Congress, not by parents or school systems. In my opinion the event was exploited by the left to critize Bush and his spending $26,000 on the event and highlight his cutting in education funding. Also, it was seen by them as a political event because it was close to the election and Bush did encourage kids to be cool and stay in school, but the speech also was made to highlight his educational agenda. Was it right to waste taxpayer money to investigate Bush's speech? NO,but the rightwing muckrakers seem to forget that they weren't up in arms about Bush addressing school children or feel the need to questions his motives. It seems to me too often people in Washington seem to forget to treat people how they want to be treated instead of using past issues to excuse their equally hoggish behavior.

Preventative maintenance to Edison is 'butchering' to property owner Sarah Torres 2009-09-10 08:52:47 I had a man come to my place and tell me he was going to trim trees. When he was finished, he had cut small hickory trees not even close to power lines. It was like he had clear cut from property line to property line. A large tree that had been previously butchered by the electric company split down the center and fell over a few weeks ago. Edison came out and got it out of the power lines, but the expense lies with the home owner to clean up the destruction caused by the way they trim. There should be a time limit to easements for all utilities. Why should they get indefinite control of land at no cost and no responsibility to the land owner? At some time in the future electricity could become obsolete, just as telephone lines have become obsolete. The easements should not be something infinite. Property owners need to be very wary of corporate interests.

Portage gives up traffic light enough 2009-09-10 09:55:16 Portage had a light that was illegal and speed limits that were also out of compliance with the rest of the state. The term trap is accurate and ODOT seemed to side with motorist who happened to fall into it. The numerous complaints filed witht the state were found to be valid and that is why the light and speed limit needed to be changed. Portage needs to suck it up and follow the law instead of ignoring it to generate income. No one around you has any sympathy for you. 235 through McComb is very busy,so is 281 through Custer. One of the reason people have no regard for the whining in Portage is because when someone points out the traffic hazards they have to enduren,it is always met with a we dont care about you, because we are more important or needy or entitled to something that you aren't. I wonder if sleepy ole Custar is under the same fiscal emergency like Portage and is in danger of being disbanded because it can't figure out how not to spend money it doesn't have? Portage isn't the only community that has to deal with traffic accidents of it's citizens either. Oh, BTW what was illegal in Portage was the speed limit and the now the state has told you so, I notice a complete disregard for thinking Portage has to obey the law. Portage hasn't earned the respect of most people in the county.
Latta wants to slow down health care legislation S Thomas 2009-09-10 09:56:55 Mr. Latta, We have had years of discussion and debate on health care issues and reforms. It is time to move forward, not continue with more excuses. If you do not wish to see a public option in the plan, I suggest you also tell your constituents they should not have medicare benefits. That is a public option, it is well received and works for people. Yes, improvements are always possible, but not having any insurance should never be an option in this country. Sherri Thomas M.D.

Why don't you try the BG News....maybe you could actually get an uninformed freshman to believe the crap that spews from your "mighty pen". To the Editor: Who did judge, prosecutor protect? I agree 2009-09-10 10:04:18 I agree with you on the fact that Monica sucks at her job. She needs to be a victim once and then maybe she would have a different outlook on the job she is paid to do.
Latta wants to slow down health care legislation enough 2009-09-10 10:07:03 If Mr. Latta hasn't used his terms in Congress to discuss this issue and be part of the solution, perhaps he needs to move on and leave the job to someone who is interested in helping to solve issues that face the citizens of his district. Veterans have a public options so do people on medicare and they are interested in having to provide insurance for themselves. I will need a form of insurance I can afford when I retire. Mr. Latta, stop wasting your time in office and jump in and try and help figure out a solution or plan instead of having the nerve to say we need to wait some more. Considering your attempt at have a discussion with your constituents was a phone conference where you only took questions from people who agreed with you. Give me a break when and where do you try to meet your constituents to discuss anything? How could you know what they want?
Portage gives up traffic light concernedcitizen 2009-09-10 10:24:22 if you knew what you were talking about you would know that the state has no regulations for removing a light, the guide lines that they are using are warrents to get a light. the so called complaints the state received about portage is not why they followed through the start of this is Mr ron sharp for calling the state and having it looked into so get your story straight. does custar have a four lane highway going through it? is 235 a four lane highway? does custar have a group home? does mccomb have a group home? answer to this is NO. if you attend council you would also know that the police does not generate income to keep the town going they are not a revenue but a peace keeping and safety protector. the fiscal emergency is not do to the police or the light but the poor overseeing of the clerk/treasurer by the council. all i can say is i hope that if you ever travel through portage you dont get trapped by the bad police who are just doing their job in protecting the towns people. you know that 90% of the people who complain about portage are the ones who got "TRAPPED"
To the Editor: Blue Bird Train back on the right track H. Prielipp 2009-09-10 10:38:01 I was shocked after reading this article. Shocked that a city official- chad hoffman, would voice his personal opinion on the TLEW. His position in a public office does not mean insulting and belittling a company who wants to do business in Grand Rapids. Moreover, he certainly does not govern what goes on in Waterville by saying the TLEW will be out Waterville by the end of the year and that no one wants you in Waterville. I have been waiting for the the train to operate between the two towns again. I have good memories of taking my son on the train and want to do the same with my daughter. Part of the appeal, besides the train ride, is spending time in BOTH towns.
Portage gives up traffic light enough 2009-09-10 10:51:41 concerned citizen seems to agree the light was illegal and it wasn't something Portage was entitled to have. The speed limits were also not in compliance with state regulation and Portage was told it needed to get in complaince. It appears the light never met the requirements to be hung up in the first place. People futher down 25 seem to not have the difficulty the citizens of Portage does and it was state during a council meeting that the police generated enough funds to pay for a fire truck (or something similar) and other village goodies. It can't pay for itself because it cant write tickets to people who refuse to drive through town.
Latta wants to slow down health care legislation DLF 2009-09-10 11:17:36 It has become painfully obvious that Republican Party has absolutely no interest in what Mr. Latta calls "real bipartisan negotiations where Republicans can be included and have input into the final legislation." Republicans in Congress have done their best to obstruct reform with exaggerations, distortions, and outright lies. If the Republicans truly want "quality health care coverage affordable and accessible for every American," they could have crafted a bill when they controlled both the Presidency and Congress from 2001 to 2006. Instead, they sat on their hands and did nothing while collecting millions of dollars in campaign contributions from the health care lobby. Mr. Latta's call to "start over" is mere partisan foot-dragging, and the public is tired of it.

Portage gives up traffic light entertained 2009-09-10 11:46:16 Some of you need to ease up on Portage. Removing the light that has been there for years is a big change for many residents. I agree with concernedciziten.... every single town/city that I know of has officers who sit and wait for speeders. Why should Portage be any different? They are regulating traffic. That is part of their job. If you are speeding, then by all means they have every right to pull you over. Same for any other town. The light is going to be removed, and the speed increased. Fine. Portage can adjust, but give them time.

Obama hopes his pitch will sway health care debate brutus 2009-09-10 13:44:38 To elaborate more on this the Republicans after crying about the Pres. speech to children, and at last nights speech, they are teaching the children of America not to respect anybody or anything. If you don't respect the President of the Unites States, why respect your teacher, your principal, your law enforcement, yourself. These people need to be called out on their behavior and some people like Addison "Joe" Wilson needs to resign from office. This is no laughing matter. I would not condone this behavior towards the Bushes or Reagan. Republicans you need to purge the party of the racists, the birthers and just plain hatefull people.
To the Editor: Who did judge, prosecutor protect? phantom16 2009-09-10 13:47:37 Actually for those of you who are so eager to judge, how do you know that she hasn't been a victim before? She does have a special outlook on how she relates to the victims she works with. She enjoys her job and is very dedicated to helping victims and thier families. She assisted one of my family members, and several others that i know and was always very helpful, curtious and empathetic to what we were going through. People can easily criticize when they are NOT the ones performing the job.

Latta wants to slow down health care legislation OLDHAM 2009-09-10 16:24:46 LISTEN UP DUMBOCRATS....... ABSOLUTELY NO HEALTH INSURANCE FOR ILLEGALS. PERIOD !!
Latta wants to slow down health care legislation enough 2009-09-10 16:50:05 LISTEN UP REPUBLICANTS AND RIGHTWING MUCKRAKERS- WHY WOULD AN ILLEGAL NEED HEALTH INSURANCE WHEN THEY CAN COME HERE AND GET FREE CARE BY HOSPITALS WHO LEGALLY CAN'T TURN THEM AWAY UNDER THE CURRENT SYSTEM? Why would they want to pay into a system they already have access to at no cost now? The cost of uninsured illegals is the same for everyone who shows up in the emergency center and can't pay-FREE. It is passed onto people who actually have insurance. Are EMTs and other first responders going to have to check for passports at the scene of an accident and will they be trained to spot false ids? Saying illegals dont have free health insurance/care now is what is the big lie. They get free care right now and the Republicans dont object to it one bit or want to change the system that serves citizens of other countries better than our residents. Have a feeling they can cross the border into their home country without being detained for medical bills. Are pharmacies at Walmart going to be busted for giving $4 dollar prescriptions to illegal's babies or children because they didn't check the parents id or recognize it as fake? It's just another lie like the death panels PERIOD!
Latta wants to slow down health care legislation brutus 2009-09-10 17:54:15 Allowing the purchase of insurance across state lines is about the stupidest argument I ever heard. Yeah United Health care of Ohio is going to give you a better deal than United Health care of Michigan. The insurance companies have a monopoly now on insurance. Do you really believe if they did this they would not uniform their rates like they do in each state. I swear one Republican says something and the rest look like bobbleheads, yeah, yeah ,yeah state lines, yeah yeah. Geesh.
Schools deal with hype around speech useyourhead 2009-09-10 18:35:36 Good for you AJ. Keep it up.
Portage gives up traffic light concernedcitizen 2009-09-10 19:01:39 enough, you must not know how to read or understand what you read. i said that odot does not have guielines to follow to remove a light, so they are using guidelines they have to get a light which is not the same. where do you get that the light was never in compliance? when it was put up in 1929 portage was a booming business with banks, grocery stores, hotel, and many other buildings. in 1974 there was still a very busy business district. only in the last 5 years has portage lost the main business area. you still do noy respond to the fact that custar and mccomb are only 2 lane roads and to cross them is much quicker and they do not deal with semis that are avoiding scales on 75. example the semi that just got caught on the rr crossing avoiding the scales. over wide, over weight, and stuck.
Portage gives up traffic light Mark Foster 2009-09-10 19:16:43 Jesus, give it a rest already on "we have FOUR lanes", you may have four lanes but you don't have crap for traffic going through there anymore. Helena has only two lanes and they have 5 times the traffic going through as portage does so stop trying to justify the light because "we have FOUR lanes", you could have ten lanes there and you still don't have crap for traffic. If you really believe that something catastrophic is going to happen now that your useless light is gone your grasp of reality explains why your town can't manage it's money. As for your police, does this podunk town need 90hrs a week of police protection??? LOL give me a break, you people are a bunch of clowns! You also can't blame one person there on you loosing your light, I for one have called to complain about your speed limits, light, and asked for an audit to insure that 85% of your income was not coming for tickets, so you can thank me as well. Your welcome :)
Rally to end blood donor ban downthePike 2009-09-11 00:26:56 If there is even a remote possibility that HIV-tainted blood might be obtained from gay men, then they should not be allowed to donate blood. Why the big fuss anyway? It's a nameless donation - no one gets credit points for donating. And if the tests are supposed to prove the blood is HIV-free are totally fail proof, then someone is lying about the use of the word "sure." One cannot be sure that any blood doesn't have something contagious in it. What I want to know is how anyone knows that a propective donor is gay unless they themselves insist on announcing it. And do illegal aliens donate blood? What kind of testing is done on ANYONE before they are allowed to donate blood that could go to anyone? None. If you're going to have surgery, your best bet would be to donate your own blood ahead of time so that it will be there should the need arise.
Portage gives up traffic light General Custar 2009-09-11 01:00:11 It hasn't been all that long since an audit showed Portage was getting some 90% of their operating funds from the mayors court. Since the state changed that law and the federal investigation into the police department happened the budget in Portage has went downhill. Too bad for them. On most days Rudolph has more traffic than Portage because people don't go out of the way to avoid it. Shoot, I would rather have a dead four lane highway than a busy two lane road infront of my house.
Rally to end blood donor ban thebabyfacedheel 2009-09-11 04:07:46 downthePike displays the typical short sightedness of bigots. In general, most surgeries are pre-planned, so collecting ones own blood is not an option. While downthePike is correct that donating ia anonymous, the donator does get credit for what he/she gives. There was a story in the news earlier this week about a donor who will have given 60 gallons in his lifetime. HIV is not a gay disease. It's a people disease. All donated blood is screened for pathogens, including HIV. The need for blood should outweigh our personal hangups. There was a time in this country when Africian Americans were forbidden from donating. Fortunately, that policy has been recinded. It's time for the FDA to eliminate this discriminatory policy as well.
Rally to end blood donor ban thebabyfacedheel 2009-09-11 04:08:51 Sorry, that should have read "surgery AREN'T preplanned".
