BGHS student cited for OVI BGVOTER 2010-01-16 19:10:18 I just find it strange that sometimes names appear in the blotter, sometimes it is listed as "juvenile", sometimes things do not appear in the blotter at all and sometimes things that usually appear in the blotter get there own article all by themselves.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids GR parent 2010-01-16 19:54:22 Mr. & Mrs. Ewing, I have read and talked with other people about all of this. I truly think the fault lies with Otsego transporation, I am not sure what goes on in that dept. How many times did the driver lock the kids in the van at Northwood? One of the special needs buses does not even allow students to talk. When a very good driver was concerned about safety they just simply took her route away from her, what a loss for her students. I am sure you know her your children were probaly lucky enogh to ride her bus. We have some very good bus drivers I am lucky my children ride one of those buses.
To the Editor: Letter writer apologizes melanie 2010-01-16 23:08:56 Good to hear your soft spoken reply. It was disheartening to see the vitriol other "christians" dropped upon your head. As the saying goes, "No true conversion was ever made at the end of a sword." I appreciated you response to my letter. As I mis-speak Mark Twain, "I may disagree with you whole-heartedly, but I will fight to the death for your right to believe as you do."

To the Editor: Letter writer missed joy and meaning of Christmas melanie 2010-01-16 23:19:11 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhdaNEoVQDI&feature=related OH FOR PETE'S SAKE! ALL OF YOU GET OFF YOUR HIGH HORSES & DROP IT! Christmas is over & the subject has been beaten to death. No true conversion was ever made @ the end of a sword & you won't beat him into agreement with you. Those tabloid tv "reporters" are as bad as Pat Robertson, open mouth & insert foot. They make any true christian as angry as it makes their enemies. Why anyone listens to them......
To the Editor: Merry Christmas to 'Grinchy' writer melanie 2010-01-16 23:26:30 I used the word "fun" because Christmas is meant to be a celebration. I also acknowledge that there are also others who are celebrating @ the same time, who are NOT christian. I did not write the letter to proselytize, but to tell him not to be so nasty to everyone. I am so sick of the vitriol on these pages for or against Christianity. We live in a wonderful country that was birthed by christian principles, one of those being that everyone is allowed their own beliefs, whether we agree with them or not!!! Just as i demand you to respect my right to live openly as a christian, I will respect your right to be whatever you are. THAT is what america is supposed to be! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhdaNEoVQDI&feature=related
To the Editor: BG woman disappointed in holiday lights melanie 2010-01-16 23:32:09 WOW Anna! Seems like every comment I've found that you have left has been extremely negative & attacking the letter writer.....and you don't even live here! What's up with the attitude towards a townspeople you don't even live within a hundred miles of???!
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Bobby J. 2010-01-17 00:09:38 All I'd like to say is: "Thank God Harter didn't get re-elected!" Ding Dong the Wicked Harter is gone! Now we can fix things and make Otsego a better place for all.
BGHS student cited for OVI iawlfan 2010-01-17 00:21:03 And yet you find it more beneficial to talk about it here than make a 5-minute phone call to ask the question and get a real answer. What's funny is that I know the answer, and yes, there is more to it than what I have written in my previous comments. But nobody wants to listen, so I'll make you work for it yourself. Seriously. Make a phone call. 352-4611. Ask for the editor, Dave Miller.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Big Red 2010-01-17 08:12:03 Mrs. Asmus has every right to state her opinion as anyone else in this blog. She's employed by the district AND a district resident. Her opinion matters just as much as anyone else. Her line of questioning about Mr. Tolles representing the Ewings is valid, but it took awhile for the Ewing's to admit to that. Schools aren't perfect and when they make mistakes, work through the channels and get it corrected. It may not happen on YOUR timeframe, but it will happen. I must say, I'm disappointed that a religious leader in the community is impugning the character of a school official. WWJD?
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Past supporter 2010-01-17 09:08:38 Mrs. Asmus does have a right to her opinion. But She does not question anything other then the victims. For example should a bus driver call the transportation driver and report naked kids running around in the bus? Why after reporting a unsafe bus by a driver with 28 years experience was she ignoored and taken off the route? Instead they found a new driver for the route and we can only hope the children are safe. Many resisdent who want a consolidated campus built in their back yard have looked the other way. If Mr. Garber gives them a new school all sins are forgiven. You see this in board meeting as the majority of his supporters live around Tontagany or are staff members. The last act of the board in December was to ignoor the voters and go forward with the lease. As many of you know this was quickly pushed threw before the new board came in who represented what the majority wanted (no consolidation). They also set up a building committee to make all the choices (all hand picked) and this Mrs' Asmus the board and adminstrator had time to do before christmas not take care of naked kids. No questions by anyone here on these subjects?

Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Jennifer Asmus 2010-01-17 09:54:05 First: To disgusted, What is the potential outcome of my words/actions? Second: The people who bring an issue to light must realize that they are going to be asked questions first and how do you know who I have and have not spoken to? I do not have to blog to get answers. There are other avenues to finding answers. If I blog then there is no "she said" because it is documented. And why is it that the comments on here continue to go back instead of forward. If two wrongs do not make a right then move on and make changes. Quit the finger pointing and compare apples to apples. Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Past supporter 2010-01-17 10:25:47 0 comments or questions by the staff to the following 1. Westons voting record as reason to close school by Mr. Garber (clear bias against our neighbors) 2. Multiple families have complain about bussing to the board, I believe 3 at the last meeting alone (this problem did not start for everyone a day or two before Holidays) 3. When we closed the 32,000 sq ft Weson building and kept the 24,000 sq ft Haskins building we dismantled a quality special needs program for the lack of room 4. The last board ignoored a large majority vote for keeping schools in the villages 5. A 28 year bus driver removed from route for reporting it to be not safe 6. The school board had a projected 2 million dollar shortfall(reason to close Weston) and right before the lease this all disappeared and we have plenty of money for a lease payment and larger fuel bills ($500,000 and how much more for busing?) 7. Why did the bus driver not report this right away to the head of transportation? 8. Why did the transportation director not call the parent and assure them this would never happen again We have no questions about this just bash a parent and ask who their lawyer is? I agree with Mrs. Asmus these things should be answered
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Jennifer Asmus 2010-01-17 10:53:07 Never "Assume" that everyone from other parts of the district agreed with the closing of Weston because when one assume's it can make an "*&&" out of you and me. So you see we may not agree on one item on an agenda but we may agree on another. Never burn bridges. Just ask for facts and then make an educated decision.
Sen. Mark Wagoner submits his resignation fedup 2010-01-17 11:17:04 right. Using the old "spend more time with my family" line is what they ALWAYS use. Bullshit. There is a shakeup in Columbus and Wagoner does not have all of his ducks in a row. Same old corruption. Good RIDDANCE!
To the Editor: How did we plug the hole in the ozone? BGScienceStudent 2010-01-17 11:27:17 Welling, you are stupid. Here's why: The Antarctic ozone hole is STILL THERE. You haven't heard about it because your corporate media is ignoring it, and we have other more controllable variables in the climate change problem. Removal of an ozone barrier WILL can cause skin cancer, you idiot. Reduction of R-10 refrigerant use has correlated with a slower expansion of the ozone hole. EVERYTHING is going to cost more. Get used to it. Science undermines your political agenda. Get used to it. You just can't seem to accept the fact that humans are destroying global ecosystems, and you clearly do not understand the value of those ecosystems. Please: stop your driveling.
To the Editor: There has to be a supreme architect BGStudent 2010-01-17 11:40:13 There is no "architect". That anthropomorphical analogy to the divine is childish and uneducated. Even assuming that divinity is real, it cannot be described in terms of a silly human occupation. How shallow. How naieve. Tom Cavendish has obviously never looked into philosophy or physics. He just started making up mythologies, just like the authors of the Bible. The supposition Mr. cavendish made is correct: the scientists HAVE explained why the sun has not disintegrated, and provides a specific level of energy to the Earth. I really do wish that any Joe-blow with a contrived religious ego-stroke would first try to read a few things about the physics of the cosmos before they undertake their modern mythologies. BTW: If an architect designed the recent earthquake in Haiti. He/she/it is most definitely NOT supposed to be worshipped and venerated!!!
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids OTres 2010-01-17 11:50:12 Past Supporter, certainly addresses a number of the issues that will need to be dealt with by the new board. It is obviously, going to be a very tough 2 - 3 years for our local economy. Higher unemployment, foreclosures and reduced wages will be at the forefront locally, as predicted by state and county governments. This will definitely cause lower tax revenues to be collected. Forecasting is not an exact science as evidenced by our Otsego treasure going from a 2.2 million dollar deficit forecasted at the end of May, to hey we are okay to make lease payments. Everyone needs to realize the reason we are doing a lease program, was to circumvent the voters of the district. The previous board and superintendent believe they know best for the majority and that is why they needed to circumvent the voter. A bit of cooperation and working together with local communities and voters of the district would have gone a long way toward development of a masterplan of the majority and not the few. People were told that was off the table and the previous regime knows best. The district needs to take a step back as economic conditions have changed again since the previous board decided to take us down the road of centralized campus. I would highly suggest to the new school board to suspend and stop the current project. The so called free money in Columbus is still there and has not been tapped at this point for other use. We need to review the masterplan and make wise economic decisions based on the current economy and not jeopardize the education of the children. Otsego for the current time needs to get out of the construction and high finance business of building something that may not serve the needs of all communities, voters and families. Stop the madness now, so the attention can be focused on exactly why this blog started in the first place. The supposed free money in Columbus is not free if we have to spend $4 million dollars to get it. Change the scope of the masterplan in the spirit of cooperation to all of the communities and the school district. The previous board and Mr. Garber created the division in the district, and the majority must now get the district back to education. To the current board of education, stop the project until we are better able to forecast the needs of the district.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Topic Police 2010-01-17 13:03:14 Whoa-let's get back to the correct subject. A child took his pants off/had his pants taken off and it was not dealt with in the manner the parents approved of. No matter where the school is located, children will still have to ride a bus and problems are going to occur. If you're going to argue, argue/solve that issue and quit bringing up every problem you have with Otsego and it's people. It makes you look petty.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids OTres 2010-01-17 13:18:40 Topic Police I believe that if the board and superintendent were not so involved in the processes of trying to sell and deliver a central campus, they would have more time to attend to the needs of the childrens educational needs. Sorry if it may sound petty to you, but it si all involving when all communities are effected. You are telling me that it isn't petty when a number of the statements made here are already accusing the new board of things after just 1 meeting. I guess I will have to sound petty, if you firmly believe that the whole financial outlook hasn't had an effect on issues of closing schools that once took care of special needs children and we send to Nothwood and N. Baltimore. All of this because we no longer have room for them.
To the Editor: There has to be a supreme architect Manson48 2010-01-17 14:40:04 The intelligent design proponents are very selective in their mention of things. We have birds that can not fly, animals with eyes that can not see, and the hippopotamus, a most disgusting creature with no purpose. The intelligent design theory is fatally flawed, if only because it demands that the creator has a creator also. This is where the final say is established, and the theory implodes. Who created your creator? JM
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Geez 2010-01-17 14:41:25 I think what Topic Police meant was the article was headlined "Superintedent Accused of Not Caring About Kids" and the focus of the article was on a special needs student that came home on an Otsego bus without his pants on. That's not to say there aren't other issues worthy of discussing in another forum. When an article with such a headline is published, those who were not in attendance at the Board meeting will certainly have questions. I don't feel enough facts/information was given in the article - it seems only natural that people would want to try and clarify what had taken place.
To the Editor: Responds to comments on Israel, Palestine Manson48 2010-01-17 14:48:44 Mr Goveia fialed to mention the most profound aspect of Jim Bailey's trip to Israel. He said he was surprisedtofind out that the American notion that the Palestinians were terrorists was absolutely unfounded. Go figure that the Jews have lied yet again. Without this terrorism, what basis does Israel have for their devastation to Gaza? JM

Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids past supporter 2010-01-17 16:12:46 I am sorry if people cannot make the connection between some of these other topics. 1. Weston Closed no room for special needs classes (now bus them 2-3 hours a day out of the district) 2. The 200,000 saved from Weston closing means the 2 million dollar shortfall somehow goes away and we can afford a lease payment. 3. Mr. Garber wants to use Weston as the Junior high during renovations (this can be done know that he has emptied the building and overcrowed the other two elementary schools.) Can anyone here honestly tell me if the last operating levy would of passed they would have supported keeping the original plan? Please be honest and tell me.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids math 101 2010-01-17 17:27:58 If Otsego schools do not have the money for special needs,or safe transportation, how do we have the money for sports??? Those busses sure roll for them 6 days a week. Don't say pay to play that is a total joke! it doesn't even come close to covering the cost. When a driver with 28 years asked for an aide because of unsafe contions, she was told NO MONEY and put on another route. I thought education for ALL students was the schools job not sports not everyone plays sports, how many kids are on some of these sports buses?? yet when parents ask for a safe trip for their child TO SCHOOL they are treated poorly, I just don't get it. What is this school about. sports or education? or does it matter where you are from and what your last name is?
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Lots of questions 2010-01-17 17:32:47 It was my understanding that some of the district's special needs children have been bussed to locations other than Weston for years. The child in the article had been attending classes at WoodLane. I do understand the connection between the topics, but when someone asks a question specific to one particular topic it seems that rather than a direct answer, it gets circled around. We will never know what would have happened had the levy passed - all anyone would have here is speculation. How does getting rid of Mr. Garber solve the immediate problems? Shouldn't everyone try to work together?
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Just wondering, again 2010-01-17 17:39:33 math 101: So, it matters where you're from???? Isn't the newly elected Board president from Grand Rapids? The thought here seems to be that Grand Rapids is part of the elite. What's gonna' change???? And, could you give me a list of last names, please? I'm hoping to be included in both lists.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids GR parent 2010-01-17 17:46:28 If sports are going on buses why can't my second grader go on one field trip a Year?? The parents group even offered to pay for it and was told NO.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids OTres 2010-01-17 18:53:56 Just wondering, It has been stated before the "elite" statement is who Mr. Garber decides he will discuss or even talk to concerning issues that should be addressed and not a list of names. It is great that the new board members came from different areas of the district. Weston, Grand Rapids and Tontogany. Much better representation of the district should provide more cooperation, hopefully.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Jennifer Asmus 2010-01-17 21:03:16 I look forward to meeting all of you bloggers at the next Otsego Board Meeting. I encourage each one of you to be there. Have a great week. Jennifer Asmus
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Just wondering 2010-01-18 00:03:10 OTres, My comment was directed to math 101, however, in one of your previous posts you stated "This involves the treatment of a situation depending on who (you are) and where you are from", which led me to believe you also felt certain communities and certain names were among the "elite" - your term, not mine. It will certainly be a challenge for the new Board to unite the district when there seems to be so much resentment. I wish them the best of luck, they're going to need it.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Past supporter 2010-01-18 06:55:30 I think it is important for people to share what they think at board meetings. But the board needs to think about what the majority in this school district want and most speak at the polls. Look at how people voted vs. a minority view taking over a school board meeting. They are the ones that put food on the table for this district and it is dangerous to not listen to them. Harter and Garber both blew them off last month when they signed that lease. If I was a staff member I would not get so excited about these new buildings. If they go forward with this you will see tough contract talk to help pay for this. Somehow people think the taxpayer pie of money is always getting bigger to support this and shrinking property values and major cuts in wages and Health insurance by taxpayers will soon be felt by all.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Let's see what happens 2010-01-18 11:37:52 I agree that people should share their ideas. I also agree that the Board should take into consideration the wants and beliefs of the majority. But, what if the majority felt that African Americans should not be allowed into our schools? What if the majority thought females did not deserve the same education as males? What if the majority felt special needs children didn't count? Hopefully, the Board of Education looks at every aspect of every situation and is composed of members who are diverse enough to make an informed decision for the betterment of the entire district - both those in the majority and those in the minority.
Camera trips traffic light at BG intersection thegreyhair 2010-01-18 11:52:06 GOOD JOB, DAVE AND CREW !!
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids otsegomom 2010-01-18 12:02:10 Wow! So far I've just been listening. This is the most intelligent comment I've seen out of all 88. Bravo!!!! Thanks, Let's see what happens.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids OTres 2010-01-18 13:04:03 Lets see what happens, The minority was the only thing being served at the time, and I can agree with making informed decisions which has also been an issue. In a democracy a simple majority serves all very well. I believe we now have diversity on the board, which should serve us well. Closed minds and arrogance never has served the people of the district very well. The simple fact whether anyone wants to believe it, the district has no money now and was stated by the previous board that we would need more funding in the very near future. Transparency by the board is essential to further success for the future.
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids Otsego1987 2010-01-18 13:33:22 Althought its easy to blame the bus driver Im sure they knew the child was special needs, afterall they were being trasported to a special school in North Baltimore. A bus drivers job is to drive the bus and keep the kids safe from the hazards out on the road and there are many of them. Its very difficult to keep your eyes on the road and in the rear view mirror of the children. Many adults have not been on a bus since they were in school, the seats are higher then they use to be, from the drivers seat you can only see the top of the high schoolers heads. There was a drivers recently changed from a route at Otsego that requested a aide on a route with lots of preschoolers. She was removed from a route she had for more then 20 years and put onto penta career center route. If I was the driver of this childs route I would be afraid to request a aide also. The blame here does not belong with the bus driver. Otsego has also went to transporting students in a minivan. If you look at the stats your child is hundreds of times safer in a school bus then in a van!! No way would my child be transorted in a van. Otsego recently passed up the chance to participate in a grant that would have provided 5 new buses at half the cost. Instead they are buying used buses, circumventing the newer safety features and the EPA standards of the new buses. Why??
Tough times hit family Annie 2010-01-18 13:51:34 This is so sad. Millions and Millions of dollars going to other countries and we can't even help the people right here in the United States. There is no sense to that. My prayers go out to you and I hope things get better for you in the future.
To the Editor: Letter writer missed joy and meaning of Christmas fedup 2010-01-18 14:25:18 Seriously Melanie? That was a youtube video of a backwards bible-thumper. The public discourse on this forum does not need to be cheapened by such garbage..
Shake up at Otsego Superintendent accused of not caring about kids There's-help 2010-01-18 15:20:36 Maybe it's time you get some much needed help from people who can make a difference. To start off State and Federal levels of government can be contacted. Secondly, there are agencies that help people with disabilities who are more than willing to get involved. Thirdly, the media and by that I mean local, channel 13,24,11...and nationally ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, FOX...can do much with a story like this. I'm sure all these people and organizations would be glad to lend a hand in straightening this out. Your far from alone in this great country and on this MLK day it couldn't be more appropriate.

Tough times hit family cynthia 2010-01-19 09:29:26 I don't understand why the county doesn't go after this landlord! Why is this allowed to go on when the county knows the landlord didn't take care of the heating problem? It infuriates me when landlords demand money from hardworking people and yet don't keep up their responsibilities. Where is law enforcement?
Penta teacher fired for misconduct, harassment koons8 2010-01-19 20:14:15 This was the best teacher i have ever had..who ever decided to fire him has made the worst decision cause he was the most caring person to others..The upcoming classes will be missing a good teacher..
Tough times hit family Jan 2010-01-19 20:48:24 As you can see in the photo a propane tank in the background. Why are they not using propane ? is it because they cannot afford it or haven' paid their bill?? Maybe they are behind in their rent, and thats why landlord won't fix it. Who knows, you only see and hear one side of it. Don't assume its all the landlords fault. there is 2 sides to every story.
Tough times hit family phil 2010-01-20 08:01:27 I think everyone should have rental property. While my heart goes out to these people, as an unfortunate landlord of one rental property I don't wish on anyone the drama of renting out property.

To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students Past supporter 2010-01-20 12:24:00 Asmus Multiple people from different families complained at the last meeting. This problem did not start just a few days before the holidays for all of them. Have you asked Mr. Garber how long busing has been and issue for all of these families before asking all of these questions. My guess is no and you would rather call out multiple families who kids our forced to ride on buses for 3-4 hours a day and not question that. How long have you been in charge of public relations for the school district. As a taxpayer you may think you have a write to scream out but as an employee you should be held to a higher standard of conduct and act like a professional. You are doing neither for the Otsego school district. If your child came home naked on a bus how long do you feel should be taken before action is required (by the bus driver, transportation head and Mr. Garber) If you where at the last school board meeting you would have heard others complaining of problems all year long so wake up!
BG to try renewal of school levy AdanG2 2010-01-20 12:44:51 Everyone is getting a pay cut and they want us to pass this again and then maybe another one in Nov. It just shows, give them a little and they want alot more. Maybe Mr. Caumartin should take a pay cut and see how it feels.
BG parks and rec to seek levy AdanG2 2010-01-20 12:49:27 vote NO!!!!! Remember what they tried to do last tiime we past a levy fro them. They are just going to abuse the money again and try to give MORE raises at a time when people are losing jibs.. NO WAY!!!!
New look for Wood County Hospital Ken 2010-01-20 12:54:24 The author of this article does a write up on how nice the expansion is and tells us there is an open house on Jan 24th, but doesn't tell the reader what time the open house is being conducted.
BG to try renewal of school levy Ken 2010-01-20 13:00:47 If the current tax is 3.6 mills and the proposal is for 4.2 mills it shouldn't go on the ballot as a renewal. It should be listed as a proposed tax increase, which it is.
To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students OTres 2010-01-20 13:21:25 Ms. Asmus I believe they followed the process and you have been on the Sentinel website commenting on the issue. I believe the Ewings answered your questions. You must be grandstanding by keeping the issue alive.
BG to try renewal of school levy thinking outloud 2010-01-20 13:41:48 I certainly agree with both comments, but at least you are able to vote on it. In the Otsego district the previous board found ways to just spend the money without going to the voters.
G.Rapids cuts saves village money thinking outloud 2010-01-20 14:42:49 To Grand Rapids, I think it is great you are saving money for your taxpayers at all cost. I was wondering how much tax revenue was lost when the junior high closed and what the impact will be when the elementary school closes. The small communities are having to make up for this lost revenue if possible. Will the effects be also felt from lower property values? Tough times for all but Tontogany.
BG parks and rec to seek levy BGParksUser 2010-01-20 15:22:29 That wasn't BG City Parks that tried to give huge raises across the board. That was Wood County parks, totally different board, employees, parks, etc. Vote yes or no however you feel but don't do it because of something a totally different park system did.
To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students Jennifer Asmus 2010-01-20 17:14:18 This letter was sent into the sentinel the same day I first blogged. Again, OTres and you are who????? I sign my name and take full responsibility for my words and actions and you hide your identity. Do not point fingers and call names that is not nice.

You should ask your buddy Obama to just levy a tax against everyone so they are forced to pay for such a worthy cause. (Never mind that with less disposable income, the charities that the people would normally give their money to BY CHOICE would now suffer) It's the progressives duty to make sure everyone is giving their fair share. Portage light on flash, pedestrian crossing planned iawlfan 2010-01-20 19:28:34 I'm glad the speed trap is gone and the speed limits aren't so ridiculous is such a short span, but I think changing the light is a really bad idea. I'm torn between hoping for the two accidents and the fear that any accident at that intersection is bound to be a bad one. It's just one stupid extreme traded for another, in my opinion.
To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students OTres 2010-01-20 21:24:57 Ms. Asmus, I do not believe I have called you a name. You ask questions that I also believe were already addressed to the board. I have no problem with you making your point. I think that knowing the facts would help all of us, but do not comment through asking questions you believe you already know the answer to.

Portage light on flash, pedestrian crossing planned resident 2010-01-20 22:01:52 It's too bad that it has taken "severe financial problems" to dissolve the Portage police department, but I'm glad it's gone. I mean.. what else did the police officer do besides hide and wait for someone to drive 27 MPH past the Post Office. I sure hope this new pedistrain walk-way between the Post Office and A VACANT LOT will be useful for the handful of people who will actually use it.
To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students Mr and Mrs. Ewing 2010-01-20 22:02:09 Jennifer; I believe you owe me and my wife an apology. Most importantly to my son who was the victim here. It is not your business who my attorney is or is not. What I would like to know is what is you big deal? If it make any difference, Mr. Garber and the school district have not give us the name of the attorney for Otsego Schools. Instead of continuing this contact me personally and I will tell you the truth, or better yet I have a family member who eats lunch with you everyday who would delight in setting you straight. It is amazing that we were only trying to help our son and you and others have made us the bad guys!!! Shame on you.

BG parks and rec to seek levy Rocket 2010-01-21 08:40:22 Why the emergency to get this levy on the ballot? Poor planning on the parks Directors part. She new this was an upcoming issue. Pushing a levy request through without public input. Just Say NO and lower your taxes.
BG to try renewal of school levy Rocket 1 2010-01-21 08:49:55 Why are we not asking all employees for pay cuts? In the education market there is more supply (Teachers) than demand (Jobs). We should take advantage of this and cut our employee costs. There are thousands of teachers in the area looking for work. Use this to our advantage to save some money. How about cutting spouse benifits for those who have insurance with their employer. Cutting out double insurance will also save the district money.

To the Editor: Criticizes Otsego story, headline Past supporter 2010-01-22 07:53:31 Mr. Hale you are right! as a hand full of parents just tried to get an on going problems fixed for their children, two things have happen. 1. these families have been publicly attacked by school staff (one family has had to change their phone number) and the press has made it out to be much bigger then it really is and 2. In the end we now have a aid on the bus that should have been on it a year ago and life goes on in Otsego
To the Editor: Natural Gas Act good for Ohio, nation gargie 2010-01-22 20:20:50 None of this sounds like a winning situation for the consumer. Supposedly there are huge supplies of natural gas just waiting to be tapped. Why has the cost of heating homes gone up so much? Prove it first that it's a good thing which I doubt will happen. If it was such a good thing it would already be happening. Ethanol was supposed to be so good. I didn't see much difference in it's cost. Read where they expect it's stock or whatever to double next year, those who own it I suppose think that's good, reality is it's just driving us to the poor house. Prove it's a good idea and back it up with some kind of authority that the consumer won't be abused and I'm for giving it a shot.
To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students Big Red 2010-01-22 21:40:34 I don't think Mrs. Asmus is being unprofessional by publishing her opinion. She wants the facts. The Ewings have every right to be upset about their child. I disagree w/ the manner they chose to go about it. There's no secret that Mr. Tolles is/was their lawyer. As a board member, you don't encourage people to come to a board meeting, call the media, and air your grievances without first attempting to solve the issue through the normal channels. Sometimes it doesn't happen on your timeline.

To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students Annie 2010-01-23 12:45:51 Ms. Asmus, may I ask where and when you got your law degree? It appears you are taking it upon youself to become the "Fall Guy" for some of the board members and the Superintendent. Let's see if they come to your defense if this goes any farther. As far as "Common Sense", if a police report was made and delivered to the Superintendent or Board, you would never have known about it. This issue would have come up at the meeting and they would have had a closed session to discuss it. It would never have been published, and it would never have been resolved. Otsege has a big rug and you would be surprised of all the issues that have been swept under it over the years. I trust the new board members to not let this happen in the future.

To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students Mr. Ewing 2010-01-23 15:40:54 Dear common sense: I followed all proper protocols in filing my complaint. I did contact the authorities if it is any of your business. When I contacted the transportation supervisor and Mr. Garber, they were clueless about any situation took place. I am not looking for a axe to grind. If you have lived the last ten years of my life, you would know that I am looking out for the best interests of my son. So until you know all the facts, keep your opinions to yourself. You might be interested that there are many others that have had issues with the present superintendent concerning their special needs child. I have and will be the most vocal. They will be coming to the next few board meeting to have their accounts be put on record. Dear Big Red; If you were on top of the situation, you would know that I have stated that Mark Tolles handled my dead mother's estate and that is it. As long as I am a resident of the school district, everybody will be held accountable. The time of sweeping things under the carpet is over!!
To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students Otres 2010-01-23 19:37:03 To all that demand proper protocol is followed, when will you get the message that they did follow protocol. The fact that a number of people are demanding this be done, does not get Mr. Garber and the transportation driver and coordinator off the hook. Mr. Garber needs to apologize or admit it was not taken care of with the professional etiquette the taxpayers and parents deserve. Mr. Garber just happens to work for us. I have seen his bed side manner in action and it is not that great.
Greyhound rescues kick into high gear Hkiefer 2010-01-24 09:28:27 These dogs arent just "vetted" they get good quality care at Reynolds Rd Animal Hospital. Besides updating current vaccines, they are spayed and neutered. Also, they have an oral prophy "dental" done. These dogs have not so good mouthes, usually gingivitis and gum recession, that needs total attention. These dogs are fairly easy keepers, and make great pets. I also want to remind people that are in search of a new dog, that there are alot of other breeds waiting to be adopted in our area Human Societies and other shelters! Alot of those dogs have been turned in because their own owner couldnt keep them, so before adopting any pet make sure you do your research. Make sure its the right pet for you!

Tough times hit family Louise 2010-01-25 09:47:36 This is a tough situation. Several thoughts came to mind with this story: *why is family not receiving assistance from local agencies? Perhaps they have exhausted all funds available to them. Surely they know to contact various agencies, otherwise the Sentinel reporter would have informed them. *why has the landlord not fixed the problem? why did health dept. not cite owner? Perhaps family is very delinquent with rent payments. Possibly family did something to cause the hole/problem. *what were the family's priorities? Having a home for the family is #1. Very difficult to find a landlord that will rent to a family with no income and all the more difficult to rent to a barnyard of animals. All the financial support for the various world problems/crises, yet little to help Americans to become self-supporting. Obama & Congress bailed out the big banks yet nothing was given to landlords, who probably are keeping tenants who are in tough spots with little money. I agree with above comment: there are two sides to the story -- and most times we only hear one side from the media.

To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students john_chapman 2010-01-25 16:36:30 Ms Asmus, I am an unbiased observer outside of the Otsego School System, but I cannot believe your letter! I work in the business sector, and I assure you, if you were working in it, and called out a customer in a letter to the editor, you would be fired on the spot. Yes, I know, the government sector refuses to recognize that they too have customers, but consider this: you work in a service industry, and students and their parents are YOUR CUSTOMERS. Behavior such as your's just reinforces the concept that too much of our government, and especially our public schools have totally lost touch with the concept that they exist to serve customers. Perhaps if all parents had the option to take their school tax dollars to ANY school with the best customer service, then some employees would stop considering themselves as the customers, and start placing the customer first. There is a saying in the business sector; "If you don't treat your customer with quality service and respect, then someone else will." If these customers had the option to take their business elsewhere, do you think they would after reading your letter?
BG finance director keeps numbers in line BGres 2010-01-25 17:24:22 So the finance director is worried about the "special income tax funds that support the fire division" but Mayor Quinn states that "the city will FOCUS on getting the parks and recreation replacement levy approved"?!?! To attack one of the teachers is wrong on so many levels. Yes, the situation is horrible and should HAVE NEVER happened, but there is a process you follow in everything. In my opinion this is not a blog to talk bad about others. Its a blog to state the facts.
To the Editor: Otsego officials have always done what they feel is best for students John_Chapman 2010-01-26 09:35:51 Okay, let me see if I understand your point? It's okay for Ms Asmus to attack a set of parents (customers) in a letter to the editor, but it's not okay to criticize her in this blog? You state there is a process to follow in everything. Didn't the parents (customers) follow that process by meeting with the administration and school board? Did Ms Asmus follow the proper process by publishing the letter to the editor? Why didn't she ask to speak directly to the customers in an attempt to resolve the situation? That would be reasonable customer service. I don't think I am always right, but I recognize poor customer service when I see it!
