BG to slash spending Rocket 1 2009-09-24 07:36:56 Useyouhead how many private sector employees get both sick days and vacation time? How many private employees can carry these sick and vacation days over year to year? How many private businesses pay out for unused sick time when you retire? The City needs to do FOUR services and four services only, Police, Fire, Sanitation and Roads. We do not need a community center that looses money (100K last year) and the city does not need to compete with private sector business. BG as a progressive city (see the new discrimination ordinance) should end TAXATION WITHOUT REPESENTATION! All city services should be paid for through property taxes. This would ensure ALL residents pay for city services (not just those working) and we are not taxing those that only work in the city. It is not their responsibility to pay for our services! Please tell me why my friend who only works in the city should pay for my services? Why do we deserve her 2% just because she works in the city?
Gleaning planned Saturday Casey Smith 2009-09-24 08:38:02 First I would like to thank the Sentinel Tribune for helping to get the word out. We need people in the fields to help with the gleaning. “Many hands make light work.” John Heywood Another need is for field supervisors and box trucks. We could be in more areas at the same time but our resources for hauling in the harvests are limited. If you would be willing to help contact. To the Editor: Latta urged to support true health care reform patriot 2009-09-24 09:01:22 Is that what they call it in other countries? That's the problem. Too many people thinking they work harder or they deserve as much as someone else. It's ridiculous that insurance is so costly because of those that don't have it or can't afford it. It's unbelievable that in order to get a medication that works, an insurance company can decide that 5 other medications have to be tried before they will pay for the one needed. Or how about the fact that doctors routinely suggest that people check with their insurance company before they administer treatment. Really?...this is okay?...really?

Park district gives grants Rocket 1 2009-09-24 10:54:30 I am sorry thought our tax dollars were for the Wood county park district. Why is the district reallocating our tax dollars to support other parks. Looks like I now pay for BG city parks, Wood county parks and any other local park needing money in the county. Let the local park users pay for thier own projects.

BG to slash spending townie 2009-09-24 12:04:11 Lets look at 3 shifts for fire dept employees. I would love to be like the majority of them who have an additional job. They are able to, because they are working 24hr shifts and off 48hr. Look at how many days per year they actually work and with the 48 hours off plus vacation they are able to take a 2wk vacation without using many of their vacation days. One way to save BG lots of money is to lay off the 2 code enforcers permanently! I'm sure that their salaries plus fringe benefits amounts to a lot. Then we get rid of the 3 vehicles assigned to them. What a savings considering the initial cost of the vehicles plus insurance, maintenance, gasoline etc... And why do we need three vehicles, with 2 code enforcers that we really do not need!?! Remember we are talking about not cutting essential services. So lets cut the nonessential and save for the essential.

BG to slash spending useyourhead 2009-09-24 12:52:35 Rocket, I for one would hate to see the city down to 4 services. I don't want Toledo Edisons rates. Parks and Rec. has great programs for the kids. Community Center and 2 code enforcment officers I could do with out. I do believe 1 is needed. As far as your friend that works in the city and pays BG taxes. When I worked in a different city than I lived in, the city I lived in accepted the taxes I paid to the other city. I did not have to pay for both cities. Townie, take the Fire Dept. test if thats the job you would like to have. According to the City Web Site, they work an average of 52 hours a week. We have all heard the sirens and 2,3,4 oclock in the morning. They had over 2500 calls last year.
To the Editor: BG bars urged to never again host Girls Gone Wild captain obvious 2009-09-24 13:10:25 Come on, do you really think that someone who prays on underaged kids, and then gets them (and many others) drunk, only to film them naked and in sexual situations, is a perfectly innocent bystander? Do you think it is acceptable in any way to do the same to slightly older people? Filming someone who is drunk, and getting them to sign a consent form in order to sell their image as pornography while still drunk, is completely reprehensible.
To the Editor: Latta urged to support true health care reform brutus 2009-09-24 14:03:12 Like they say useyourhead, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. You ought to be de-hydrated by now.
BG to slash spending townie Jr. 2009-09-24 14:06:19 2500 calls get real 2450 of those where false alarms to BGSU.
BG to slash spending bgresident 2009-09-24 15:06:16 Actually 2450 of them were from the drunk college students...that is why you hear the sirens at "2,3 and 4 o'clock in the morning". And Rocket, if your friend does not want to pay BG taxes just because he or she only works here then don't call the fire department if the building he or she works in catchs on fire...or if the business gets robbed don't call the police..or if she gets in an accident on BG streets EMS can let he or she lay there and bleed, and make sure not to drive on the street on the way to work because he or she "doesn't want to pay taxes because they just work here". If the firemen average 52 hours a week there needs to be something done about that overtime budget..12 hours a week at time and a half is absolutely rediculous!!! No wonder the city is in a shortage. As far as vacation time and sick time carrying over...both my wife and I, who do not work for this city, have our times carry over as well as most people I know so I'm not sure you have a valid argument there. By the way, if you want to cut out the electric department, compare your electric bill with that of Toledo Edison. Or pull out your water bill and compare that with someone from a larger city. You might want to do more research and think of how good us citizens of BG have it before you begin complaining of the services that are provided to you.
To the Editor: Latta urged to support true health care reform useyourhead 2009-09-24 15:35:29 According to your definition, the government is responsible for my health, happiness, or prosperity; well-being. Or did you have an issue with what James Madison wrote ?
BG to slash spending mikmike 2009-09-24 15:39:56 Townie, the firemen don't average 52 hours a week. That is what they are scheduled. And thats all paid at straight time. A decent pay check and great benefits isn't to much to ask for, after all, the private sector don't expect their employees to work 24 hours straight and 52 hours per week at straight time. It would be nice if the Sentitenl-tribune would do some investigative reporting and find out where all this money is being spent. It seems like we are buying a new fire truck every year. The Fire Chief is driving around in a nice Chevy Tahoe! If we have over 50 firefighters in a town of 30,000 people working 52 hours per week, how on earth are is their a need to pay hundrends of thousands of dollars in overtime? Where are all these fires happening? I'm not trying to bang up on the Fire Department alone, but come on! No wonder the fire level fund is dry.

Does the Gov. take care of people during a crisises such as a hurricane, Tornado, wildfires, floods? We have a healthcare crisis in this country. Do you believe in Genocide? What do you propose to do with the people who can't afford insurance and are dying? Time to put up or shut up.
To the Editor: BG bars urged to never again host Girls Gone Wild Michael Bishop 2009-09-24 17:19:47 With all the bars, and college kids in BG, I think there is already TOO MUCH "hedonism" in this town. Evidently its ok to trade our collective morality for a quick buck. And, that is what every bar does when it envites GGW into their establishments. It is a bad decision, bodes ill for our community. However, you are not likely to have the city side with this attempt to rid BG of GGW. As they have shown the LAW can easily be thrown out to make the city a buck. Look how they throw out the noise ordinence every year when the tractor pull comes to town, and if you think they dont make money on GGW... then you are not thinking of all the citationsthat they wrote that night for "public intoxication" (65) at $150.00 or so a pop. It's time to take back for everyones sake.

To the Editor: Latta urged to support true health care reform useyourhead 2009-09-24 19:25:28 brutus, short memory? 1st question. Read post #7 in regards to the military. 2nd question Disaster Relief and Emergancy Assistance Act is designed to provide a means by which the federal government MAY SUPPLEMENT state and local resources in major disasters and emergancies where those state and local resources have been or will be overwhelmed. The Governor of the state must make the request to the President. 3rd question Genocide. the deliberate and systematic destruction of a racial, political, or cultural group. No I don't believe in genocide. Do you? 4th question How about interstate competition and tort reform. Competition brings better products, better service, lower costs, and greater innovation in every industry. Let people shop for health insurance like they do for all other products they purchase. If one company is too high, people will go to another. Satisfied ?
To the Editor: BG bars urged to never again host Girls Gone Wild Mikedun23 2009-09-24 19:32:34 I am a student at BGSU and could not agree more with the intent and spirit of this well-articulated letter. Without question, Joe Francis is an unabashed smut-peddler. However, Francis does not just prey upon uninhibited young women; more fundamentally, he exploits uninhibited capitalism. If it were legal, this guy would try to make a few bucks by punching your grandmother. However, it is wrong to note that all college-age males condone this type of enterprise. I hope that most of us see it for what it is--the continued denigration and dehumanization of women for profit. Sadly, there is a proven market for this debauchery and, just as the health care debate will prove, you cannot defeat the coordinated and powerful force that is capital.
To the Editor: BG bars urged to never again host Girls Gone Wild useyourhead 2009-09-24 19:53:29 The city doesn't "throw out the law" when it comes to noise pollution. Variances. The Board of Zoning Appeals may grant variances after public hearing or may reject applications on review without a hearing. Variances thus granted may be effective for no longer than one year. Black Swamp Arts Festivale plays music past 11pm. What it comes down to is people make choices and have the right to do so. We don't have to agree with them, but is it their right.
BG to slash spending useyourhead 2009-09-24 20:26:48 I wish people would look up a little info. before they write. townie, townie jr., M.I. bgresident. The call volume is on the cities web site. 2450 of them were from the drunk college kids? 2450 of those where false alarms to BGSU? I will make this easy for you so you dont have to look it up. 215 false alarms, not just BGSU. 1880 EMS calls, not just drunk college kids. Yes the 52 hours is straight time. How many of us would work an extra 12 hours a week at straight time? I lived in lucas county, I dont want that electric or water bill back. $8 a month. Well worth it.
To the Editor: Latta urged to support true health care reform brutus 2009-09-24 20:30:32 Wow I'm impressed. You actually looked a few things up. Since you were looking things up why didn't you look up the Social Security Act. This will tell you everything you want to know about the GENERAL WELFARE. Title XIX would be a good place to start. And as I have said before United Health of Michigan will give you no better deal than United health of Ohio. Even your main stream Repubs have stop talking about that joke. 34 states have tort reform on the books now and there was no cost reduction. And I will save the best for last. How do you expect someone who has lost their job and making about 1/2 of what they used to make on unemployment and were just making the bills to pay for health insurance? C'mon tell us. And how about the people making 8-10 dollars an hour. How are they supposed to pay? C'mon tell us.

To the Editor: Latta urged to support true health care reform Mikedun23 2009-09-24 21:04:31 Brutus: Your points are well-taken by me, at least. However, you cannot argue with "traditionalists," libertarians, and/or "strict constitutionalists" on this issue. They are the products of either a weak civic education and/or parental indoctrination. In the interest of dispelling the arguments made by Beck and O'reilly puppets, it should be noted that the U.S. Constitution is a "living document." What this means for you dim-witted lemmings is that our founding fathers had the foresight to predict that times would change--a testament to their genius and knowledge of the human condition. While anyone should realize this truism, they were adroit in there calculations of what the government should represent--a balance between individual freedom and the commonweal (common good...AKA "commonwealth"). This has and is proving a tentative balance. However, the fact that we have, as a nation, become so wealthy implores us to support the commonweal in the spirit of "the better angels of our nature," as Lincoln put it in the 1860s. What is required of us, as Americans, is to again understand the social contract that founded this nation. The traditionalist interpretation of the Constitutions fails in two fundamental ways: first, it ignores the Constitution's malleability, vis-a-vis the amendment process; and second (and perhaps most damaging to our moral fiber), it discounts our obligation to one another as outlined by George Washington when he stated that "I have no other view than to promote the public good, and am unambitious of honors not founded in the approbation of my Country."
To the Editor: Latta urged to support true health care reform useyourhead 2009-09-24 22:20:05 Why stop at gov. health care? Let the gov. get into car insurance, life insurance, the price of a happy meal. What are the limits of the gov. ? I bet a gov. airline would be awesome. This would ,as you say, promote the general welfare right ? I'm sure gov. health care is the ONLY option. Hey, I have an idea to promote the general welfare of the people. Get rid of alcohol and tobacco. Lets get rid of all fast food that makes people fat. Lets reduce speed limits to 35 mph everywhere so no one will get hurt in a car accident. All for the general welfare. Where will it end ??? Seriously, where is the line of gov control ?

To the Editor: Latta urged to support true health care reform brutus 2009-09-25 06:47:51 Good post Mikedun23. It is not like we want the Gov involved in everything. But when greed has taken over and has damaged our society as a whole Gov has to step in. We are the Government. And useyourhead you actually come up with some things that I and most others agree with. getting rid of tobacco would be a good thing. But that is why we would need Gov. healthcare to help people get off the addiction of tobacco. And the fast food thing I agree with along with High Fructose corn syrup and other unsafe and unhealthy products. Products put on the market only because it was cheaper for thee Corporation and they influenced the right people. Can't get rid of alcohol though. That helps us tolerate you guys from the right. Just kidding.

BG to slash spending Rocket 1 2009-09-25 07:56:21 What right do we have to income from people who just work in the city? They pay for sewer and water and electric through billing. They use our roads as do many visitors, students and local residents who live and work outside the city and never pay any income tax to BG. If a non resident needs fire or police they should be billed. City services should be covered through property taxes. That way ALL citizens working or retired will pay for city services. As for electric that is a utility and tax money should not be subsidizing it. If it is not self supportive we should get out of the business. We are taxing people without representation. Maybe we should be a Leading city in the State of Ohio and end this practice. Wake up People our taxing policies across the State of Ohio starting at the local level are driving People and Business away.

In Kenya History By 1730, the Omani Arabs took control over the Kenyan Coast. The Arabs controlled only the coastal parts of the country. During the Arab rule clove plantations were set up over here and slave trade also became extremely prominent. In 1839, the Omani Arabs shifted their capital to Zanzibar, under Seyyid Said, which helped in consolidating and strengthening their control over this region. Talking from the bathroom again??

To the Editor: Man tells what it was like at Washington Tea Party useyourhead 2009-09-27 18:51:33 http://www.kenya-advisor.com/kenya-history.html Arab domination From about the 7th century on, Kenya history underwent a big change when Arab traders started coming to Kenya by dhows (boats) over the Indian Ocean. During the 8th century, Arabs and Persians founded colonies along the coast and came to dominate a large part of what is now Kenya for many centuries to come. This is how Swahili (together with English the official language of Kenya) appeared: a Bantu language with many Arabic loan words. Swahili became the ‘lingua franca’ (general language) between the many tribes. The Arab and Persian traders also brought religion with them – today the majority of the people in the coast region are Muslim – and from the beginning they traded slaves, transporting them to the Arab Peninsula, the Persian Gulf and other Asian regions I guess only your source is correct. Typical of you. I could insult you and call you a name, but the worst name I can call you is brutus.
To the Editor: Man tells what it was like at Washington Tea Party brutus 2009-09-27 19:59:43 You should have quit at paragraph 9 when you still had some credibility. Now you are just making a fool of yourself. This is from the site you sourced: Famous people from Kenya Some famous people from Kenya – in the positive or negative sense – are Paul Tergat, the current world record holder in the marathon, former strongman for 24 years Daniel arap Moi, palaeontologist and politician Richard Leakey, prize winning author Ngugi wa Thiong’o and environmental and womens rights activist prof. Wangari Maathai, who was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. And the most famous of them, meanwhile, is of course US Presidential candidate Barack Obama. That is to say, his father was a full-fledged Kenyan from the Luo tribe. Obama himself never lived in Kenya, though he made a much-publicized trip to Kenya in 2006. Non-african groups Non-Africans (Arabs, Asians, and Europeans) only form about 1% of the population. Along the coast live Arabs, who have been trading with Eastern Africa across the Indian Ocean since the 9th century. The world famous Swahili culture resulted from this mix of Arab and African influences. There are still some 30,000 British and other Europeans , and in the 20th century also Indians and other Asians came in to work. Although there number is small, they are economically important. What part of less than 1% don't you get? And what part of full fledged Kenyan from the Luo tribe don't you get? I really am concerned about your mental well being. Don't be afraid to ask for help.
To the Editor: Be fully informed on BG ordinances before signing petition against them brutus 2009-09-28 10:04:24 I can only imagine the fear and smear tactics the people used taking the petitions around. Typical right wing Constitution haters.
To the Editor: Ideas offered for BG to cut costs countyRes 2009-09-28 12:56:20 I would highly recommend you keep the number officers you currently have and add more coverage on Thurs., Fri. and Sat. nights to deal with the drunken college students that continue to put a strain on your safety services. If you need proof visit your downtown area at 2 am on the week ends. Maybe the city needs to collect monies from the University to contain the educated drunken students.
To the Editor: Be fully informed on BG ordinances before signing petition against them enough 2009-09-28 13:03:49 It could be possible that the people werern't aware of what the petition was about and I think in order to be legal all petitions must state clearly on the top what people are actually being asked to sign. It is also possible that a group of people want to bring it to a vote to prove how much support for anti-discrimination against others is truly out there.
To the Editor: Who did judge, prosecutor protect? just me 2009-09-28 16:19:13 then why Newlove Wenig?
To the Editor: Ideas offered for BG to cut costs bgresident 2009-09-28 19:33:17 I agree with you countyRes. Mr. Grayson, you obviously do not venture out of your safe house or apartment after 10pm between Wednesday and Saturday. If you would, come out and take a look and see the chaos that ensues and you will see that you live in two different cities; the one during the day and the drunk fight fest that happens at the bars and on the East side of town at night. You also must live on the West side of town where violence, burglary, rape and robbery rarely touch your doorstep because your ignorance pertaining to the police department is alarming. The police department provides more services than just protection. They are usually the first on scene providing CPR, first on scene when there is a fire at your house, and first on scene when there is someone breaking into your home. Not to mention they are the ones who come and pick up that loose dog you found roaming the streets. If you take away the police department and just use county services the time of response will increase dramatically leaving you fending for yourself if God forbid someone would enter your residence. Open your eyes, sir.
To the Editor: Ideas offered for BG to cut costs mikmike5847 2009-09-29 01:58:49 . Anyone who hasn't ventured out at night would be shocked. And if you haven’t, you really should come out and see the show. These dispensable cops handle what is going on with calm precision. Go out and see it for yourself. Then, let’s just fire them all!
To the Editor: Be fully informed on BG ordinances before signing petition against them useyourhead 2009-09-29 05:50:05 I love this line. "Many have experienced pregnancy or have friends or relatives who have been pregnant." Many? hahaha Could it be possible that the people who signed the petition, knew what they were singing, and signed it becasue they don't agree with it. I guess the though of people not having the same point of view as yourself in unfathomable.
BG Junior High assignment sparks memories makesmefeelold 2009-09-29 10:15:06 Great photos! I'm 29 and went to the Jr. High, looking at these pics brings back memories, some good, some awkward. I'm sure there are elements of the building that are falling apart, but the wooden doors, colorful lockers, and masonry work all evoke some nostalgia, and I hope the new building captures some of that charm and warmth that julie mentioned. Do they have metal detectors in schools now? Oye. Also, does anyone know if they will be selling off items from the school? I would look to mount a huge chalkboard in office or sons room...
Donna Swope Debbie Below 2009-09-29 11:27:25 Donna was an amazing woman to me. I think of her often as I go about my day. She so loved the Lord and modeled it every day of her life. I miss her high energy, joyful spirit. Can't wait to see her in glory.
Cops: Man asks to be deported, can't afford US downthePike 2009-09-29 12:17:17 Let's see... if he entered this country illegally and now wants to be deported because he says that it's too expensive to live in the U.S., I want to know if I can go with him! Maybe his country will give me a job and some aid and I won't have to live on the streets. Y' think?
Portage to cut police, up taxes fed up 2009-09-29 13:49:01 You tax me for your obviously idiotic way of running the town? That is not the way it should be. What the hell did you people spend our tax dollars on? There is nothing here! No retail no industry. You are as bad as the Fed, spending money you dont have.
Ohio to require car booster seats for kids Oct. 7 Teri 2009-09-29 13:58:07 Over 40 pounds and 3 inches shy of 5 foot in a booster seat? If those kids can't be buckled in with a seat belt, there is something wrong. Parents just need to take the necessary steps to protect their children and use the equipment that is available. To much government control where it should be with the parents.
Portage to cut police, up taxes Not giving up 2009-09-29 15:49:55 I agree Fed up, lets move to a better town that doesn't have a tax. How about BG ? Oh wait, they have a tax. How about Pemberville, ooops I think they have a tax also. Fostoria ? Nope, got a tax. I know how about Jerry City or Cygnet, darn, no retail or industry, or police dept. I guess we will just have to stay in Portage and make this a better town by working together. One more question Fed up, what tax dollars are you refering too?
To the Editor: Anthony Wayne students' behavior criticized Otsego Parent 2009-09-30 09:22:37 Remember a few years ago when Otsego basketball players got into physical fights with members of the opposing audience? Those players were allowed to continue their high school sports career. I and many others at the time thought they should have been banned from all high school sports period. A no tolerance policy is what ALL schools need.
To the Editor: Reform needed now brutus 2009-09-30 09:27:12 You said it Maria, the dignity of healthcare. Good letter!
To the Editor: Retired officer praises prosecutor Hurt 2009-09-30 09:29:32 I do not think anyone was talking about criminals, the references were to VICTIMS of crime and that way in which they are being treated in Wood County.

What an arrogant cad. Sadly these people like him could care less about anyone else. Hope your daughter is OK.
To the Editor: Reform needed now Maxx 2009-09-30 10:52:23 I agree that the current health care system has its flaws, even so, it is THE BEST ON THIS PLANET! Tort reform is needed first. I'm curious, what percentage of my paycheck do you and brutus feel entitled too anyways?
Portage begins long road to recovery thegreyhairedone 2009-09-30 11:49:39 I MUST RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE WITH THE EDITOR. COUNCIL COULD HAVE AND SHOULD HAVE REDUCED THEIR SALARIES AND THOSE OF THE VILLAGE ADMINISTRATOR AND THE CLERK/TREASURER TO NEAR ZERO, BY WHATEVER MEANS POSSIBLE, EARLY ON IN THIS FISCAL CRISIS. CUTTING BACK ON MONTHLY UTILITIES, SUCH AS NATURAL GAS AND ELECTRIC,TELEPHONE, HIGH SPEED INTERNET. THEY COULD HAVE MADE THE HARD CHOICES, BUT DIDN'T. I HAD SUGGESTED A 3 MILL PROPERTY TAX TO FUND A LIMITED POLICE DEPT., THAT WOULD HAVE RAISED $18K PER YEAR. GRANTED THE CHIEF WOULD HAVE GREATLY REDUCED WAGES, THE MAYORS COURT WOULD BE GONE AND FUEL SAVING MEASURES IMPLEMENTED , BUT WE COULD HAVE HAD, A VERY BASIC POLICE DEPT.
To the Editor: Grand Rapids should welcome Bluebird train justcurious 2009-09-30 12:38:55 Does Chad Hoffman even live in the village proper? From all that I've read it seems as if he's more worried about whether he'll be driving a new town pick up truck or not. Maybe if he didn't spend so much time at the local gossip house for breakfast and lunch he might have a better grip on things.By the way, my kids really enjoyed the Bluebird ride this summer...even if it didn't cross the river.
To the Editor: Reform needed now brutus 2009-09-30 13:10:49 Please Maxxx elaborate on why Maria and i won't be paying for healthcare. Considering I am paying over $700 a month now are you volunteering to pay for me? If so send me your address so I can send you my bill.

To the Editor: Reform needed now maxx 2009-09-30 14:34:38 No comment on tort reform huh brutus? Must be the greedy doctors trying to profit from your misfortune that keep us from affordable health care. My monthly premiums are close to $1,600 wanna trade? Where is the dignity in standing behind the government while they forcibly take money from my wallet to pay for someone else's claimed needs? I am a very generous & charitable person who gladly helps the Maria's of the world BY MY OWN FREE WILL. It is the COWARD who lets the government do his or her bidding at the expense of others. These people wouldn't dream of walking up to a stranger on the street & DEMANDING money for their medical bills, but they have no problem letting the government do it for them
To the Editor: Anthony Wayne students' behavior criticized Another Otsego Parent 2009-09-30 15:09:31 I agree with you wholeheartedly! This is not acceptable behavior by anyone and all schools need to set up to the bat

To the Editor: Reform needed now brutus 2009-09-30 15:26:10 How do you know Maria doesn't already pay for Healthcare Maxx? Pretty arrogant assumption. Oh thats right I am talking to a I work harder and I pay more right wing nut. What was I thinking. And I am tired of doing research for you illiterate people. Because you would know tort makes up less than 1% of the cost of insurance. You would know 34 states already have tort reform laws and it did not drop the cost of insurance 1 cent. And apparently you are not very smart otherwise you would know we already pay for people who do not have insurance.
