Mid-Morning BellesThe Nov. 20 meeting of the Mid-Morning Belles Homemakers’ Club was held at
Carolyn Borcherding’s home. Ten members and one guest were present and enjoyed a breakfast of coffee cake,
cookies, and a squash-apple dish. The speaker was Chief Sheriff Deputy Eric Reynolds, who is a history buff
and a Civil War re-enactor. His talk centered on the day-to-day life of a Union soldier, especially
regarding the clothes, gear, and the gun which would have been issued to the troops. He brought
reproductions of all of these things to the meeting, and left the group with new insights about the war, the
soldiers, the contributions that women and other civilians made to the cause, and certainly with a deeper
appreciation of the hardships and sacrifice those soldiers went through. A donation was made to the D.A.R.E.
program in appreciation of the presentation.A brief business meeting followed and officers were elected. The
Christmas meeting and luncheon will be held at the Pemberville Library Community Room on Dec. 11.Mental
Culture ClubPEMBERVILLE – Mary Kuhlman welcomed 14 club members and a guest to her home on Nov. 12.Karen
Creps presented the parallel histories of quilting and our nation from 1600 to 2000. She intertwined samples
of children’s books that use quilts to teach the alphabet, American history, migration, social studies,
mathematics, and family history. But the highlight of the program was the beautiful quilts that Creps and
her friend, Charlene Butler, had made. They illustrated the evolution of quilts from providing warmth and
comfort to celebrating life events, and expressing one’s creativity.Kuhlman served apple and pecan pies for
dessert. The club’s Christmas party will be Dec. 10. There will not be a gift exchange. Instead members may
bring staple foods or cash gifts for the Pemberville Food Pantry. Also, members should bring a Christmas
card ready to mail and a seasonal object that has special meaning to share.
