The club held their Oct. 10 meeting at Panera Bread, Airport Highway, Holland.  Five members were present: Dorothy Cromley, Gloria Green, Diane Guthrie, Carole Rives and Patsy Vogelsong.  
Celebrating October birthdays were Cathleen Nelson, Marg Richendollar and Joanne McKenzie.
President Rives held a short business meeting. Guthrie distributed the new Garden Club Directory for the October 2013 to September 2014 year, which she had designed.
After the lunch and meeting, the group went to Nature's Corner Nursery to shop and hear a program on fall planting and winterizing.

Mental Culture Club
PEMBERVILLE — Ann Bruning entertained 17 club members in her home Oct. 8. They answered roll with a favorite recipe using honey.
Inga Offerman reviewed Rowan Jacobson’s book “Fruitless Fall, the Collapse of the Honey Bee and the Coming Agricultural Crisis.”
Since 2006 there has been an alarming disappearance of managed honey bee colonies. For unknown reasons, the hives just empty. Experts refer to this world wide phenomenon as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD).
As a result bee keepers have less honey to sell. More importantly 3/4 of all plants depend on honey bee to pollinate them. Approximately 1/3 of all food and beverages are made possible by insect pollination.  If the plants are not pollinated, they will not produce any fruit. Jacobson: “Bee keeping is the first part of industrial agriculture to fall apart.  Mankind is losing its ability to take care of living things.”

Troy-Webster American Legion and Auxiliary
LUCKEY - The Oct. 2 auxiliary meeting was opened by President Betty Briggs, with 19 members present.
Doris Plyant, a new member, was welcomed by the group.
Items received: a thank you from Hope Burkin for the donation to the Fanconi Anemia Research Fund and a donation from the Bockbrader family. These funds will be used for the Girl's State program.
Signed holiday greeting cards were to be taken to the VA Clinic by Oct. 18. They will be sent to our military men and women.
Coupons for the military serving in Japan, France and Germany are ready to be mailed. Coupons should be given to Shirley Davis as soon as possible.

Pemberville Legion Auxiliary
PEMBERVILLE - President Gwen Schroeder led the Oct. 2 meeting.
The district fall convention was held Oct. 5 and Shelly Riggs was nominated to be national auxiliary chaplain.
Membership dues are due and should be sent to the legion hall in care of Carolyn Borcherding. New membership forms are available in the hall office.
The Auxiliary Autumn Fest Craft Show will be Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Unit members' help is needed Friday to make bean soup and chili. Also, pies are needed and may be brought in on Friday or Saturday morning.
Denise Conrad and Gwen Schroeder-Zulch attended the Department School of Instruction in September and Zulch the district conference in Holland.
Borcherding reported that 49 units of blood were donated. All members who brought cookies or helped in some way are thanked.

Seven chapter members met Oct. 8 at Bowling Green Country Club for lunch.
President Colleen Smith led the business meeting that followed.
Linda Harden read City Council minutes and passed around the roster for each member to check the spelling and other information available.  A discussion regarding Beta Sigma Phi city council by-laws followed.
Marilyn Pahl reminded the members about Exemplar Night, to be held Oct. 24 at Klotz Greenhouse. The chapter members have been assigned duties. Members are to arrive by 4:30 p.m. to prepare the room for the guests. Nancy Germann hopes to have a count of those planning to attend by early next week. Each member will provide a dessert. Alpha Zeta Chapter expects a nice crowd.
