CINCINNATI — Xavier dominated in overtime on the way to an 85-73 victory over the Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team Saturday.
The Musketeers outscored the Falcons, 17-5 in the extra session.
Xavier’s Myles Davis was the difference in overtime, scoring eight points.
Davis’ 3-pointer from the right corner broke a 69-69 tie with 3:59 left in overtime. He made another 3-pointer with 1:29 left to push Xavier up 79-73.
“My teammates found me,” said Davis. “I was in the right spot in the right time. I got my feet set and shot my jump shot. They have confidence in me.”
With 1:19 left in regulation, Richaun Holmes gave the Falcons a 67-66 lead with a layup.
Holmes then blocked Isaiah Philmore’s jumper, and teammate Anthony Henderson grabbed the rebound.
Henderson split a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left to give BG a 68-66 lead.
Semaj Christon then tied the game with two free throws with 5.5 seconds left. He finished with 22 points.
BG’s Jehvon Clarke missed a 3-pointer from the top of key just before regulation ended.
‘‘It’s a tough loss,’’ BG head coach Louis Orr said. ‘‘I’m pleased with our guys’ effort, and their fight. ... They gave a winning effort. ... We did a lot of good things.’’
Holmes scored a career-high 26 points, hauled in nine rebounds and registered five blocks to lead the Falcons.
‘‘He had the best game of his career. He’s a big talent, and he’s starting to step into those shoes,’’ Orr said. ‘‘He made big baskets. That was a grown-up game for him.”
Henderson and Clarke each finished with 13 points. Clarke also had five rebounds, and four assists.
The Falcons were only 5-of-20 on 3-pointers (25 percent), and 18-of-31 from the free-throw line (58.1 percent).
NOTES: BG is 3-5 and Xavier is 6-3 ... The game saw 10 lead changes and nine ties over the 40 minutes of regulation ... Henderson had to have stitches over his eye after taking an inadvertent elbow to the head. Henderson did return to play ... BG’s Craig Sealey sprained his ankle during the game and played only 15 minutes ... The Falcons host North Dakota Wednesday with tipoff at 7 p.m. in the Stroh Center.
