Wyatt Galley’s career at Bowling Green is over, according to Falcon hockey coach Chris Bergeron.
The sophomore goalie is “withdrawing from Bowling Green,” Bergeron said.
Bergeron learned of Galley’s decision during a telephone conversation between the two Tuesday night.
Galley didn’t play in a regular-season game as a freshman.
He appeared in BG’s exhibition Oct. 2 and stopped 6-of-8 shots during the third period, but missed the
rest of the season because of what was originally diagnosed as a groin injury and then was later called
a sports hernia.
Galley had surgery this summer to repair the injury that was finally traced to his hip, Bergeron said.

Bergeron said earlier this month Galley’s sophomore season already was “in jeopardy” because of “a pretty
extensive rehab.”
Galley was not expected to be able to start practice until Christmas.
He was expected to challenge for the starting goaltending position as a freshman.
“At the end of the day, this was Wyatt’s decision,” Bergeron said. “On behalf of our whole program, we
wish him the best. He decided (BG) was not the best fit for him.”
He is the son of former Falcon Garry Galley, a standout defenseman on BG’s 1984 NCAA championship team.
Garry Galley went on to play 17 seasons in the NHL.
Galley’s decision leaves BG with three goalies — senior Andrew Hammond, junior Scott Zacharias and
freshman Tommy Burke.
Hammond is one of the best goalies in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, but Zacharias and Burke
are unproven at the college level.
Hammond started every game last season, posting a 2.73 goals-against average and a .903 save percentage
in 44 games.
Zacharias appeared in just three games last season, stopping 12-of-15 shots in 70:11 for a 2.56
goals-against and an .800 save percentage. He didn’t appear in any games as a freshman and was
red-shirted.
Burke played the last two seasons in the North American (Junior) Hockey League, splitting time between
the Owatonna Express, Port Huron Fighting Falcons and Bismarck Bobcats.
He played in 43 games for Bismarck last season, posting a 31-9-1 record, a 2.59 goals-against average and
a .910 save percentage.
“Yes. Absolutely I do,” Bergeron said when asked if he was confident the team could win with Zacharias or
Burke in goal if Hammond was sidelined by an injury for an extended period. “(Zacharias and Burke) are
the type of people who are willing to work hard and improve, and help the team be successful.
BG also has a verbal commitment from goalie Tomas Sholl for the 2013-14 season.
Sholl is playing for the Fargo Force in the United States (Junior) Hockey League this season. He played
for the NAHL’s Fresno Monsters last season.
Sholl had a 2.38 goals-against and a. 920 save percentage in 40 games for Fresno.
The 18-year-old is considered the heir apparent to Hammond.
NEXT: The Falcons will hold a team meeting Monday to start preparing for the season.
The players are returning to BG this week and classes start Monday.
Off-ice conditioning. captains practices and limited on-ice practices under NCAA rules start Aug. 27.
APPOINTED: BG associate athletics director Jim Elsasser has been named to the board of College Hockey,
Inc., an organization that promotes and markets the sport.
The board includes a member from each of the five leagues in the U.S., and the person can be a coach or
an athletics department official.
Elsasser is the CCHA representative. Also on the board are North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol from the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association, Vermont athletics director Bob Corran from Hockey East,
Rensselaer athletics director Jim Knowlton from the Eastern College Athletic Conference, and Canisius
coach Dave Smith of Atlantic Hockey.
Smith is a former assistant coach at BG.
RULES: The NCAA has announced two notable rule changes: 1) all hand passes are illegal, even in the
defensive zone; and 2) goals that go in off the offensive team’s skate will count unless the referee
determines the puck was intentionally kicked in.
