Four days after leading the Bowling Green State University football team to a conference title, Dave Clawson is scheduled to be announced as the new head football coach at Wake Forest this afternoon.
On Friday, the Falcons defeated previously undefeated and nationally ranked Northern Illinois 47-27 in the Mid-American Conference title game. On Sunday the Falcons secured a berth in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.
According to media reports, Clawson was interviewed for the job Sunday and accepted it on Monday.
Ron Wellman, a Bowling Green State University graduate, is Wake Forest’s athletics director.
At Wake Forest, Clawson replaces Jim Grobe, who resigned after five straight losing seasons. The Demon Deacons were 4-8 this season. Grobe coached at Wake Forest for 13 years going 77-82 overall and 42-62 in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
In five years at Bowling Green, Clawson was 32-31 overall and 23-17 in the MAC. With Clawson, the Falcons were 7-6, 6-2 in 2009; 2-10, 1-7 in 2010; 5-7, 3-5 in 2011; 8-5, 6-2 in 2012; and the Falcons are 10-3 and went 7-1 in conference play.
Prior to coaching at Bowling Green, the 46-year-old Clawson was the head coach at Fordham and Richmond and spent the 2008 season as offensive coordinator at Tennessee.
When he was hired at Bowling Green, Clawson received a six-year contract, and was later granted a two-year extension.
Clawson faces a tough job going forward as Wake Forest shares the Atlantic Division with No. 1 Florida State, which is headed to the BCS title game; No. 12 Clemson, which earned its second Orange Bowl invitation in three years; and, starting next year, No. 18 Louisville, which replaces Big Ten-bound Maryland.
A staff meeting at Bowling Green was scheduled for this morning.
