Bowling Green’s men’s basketball team had no answer for USF’s Corey Allen Jr. and Victor Rudd in the second half Friday night at the Stroh Center.
‘‘Defensively we just laid down towards the end,’’ said BG junior Jehvon Clarke. ‘‘We didn’t show any toughness down the stretch of the game, and that was the reason why we lost.’’
Allen and Rudd combined for 22 points in the final 20 minutes as the Bulls downed the Falcons, 75-61.
‘‘Victor Rudd really sent the tone in the second half. He came out and really became aggressive. He gave us a nice little cushion,’’ USF head coach Stan Heath said.
Allen and Rudd were a combined 8-of-11 from the field in the second half, and each made big plays when they were needed.
BG was still within 63-53 when Rudd made a 3-pointer with 6:39 left in the game.
The Falcons then cut USF’s lead to 68-60 with 3:44 remaining when Allen converted a three-point play after grabbing a rebound.
Allen finished with a game-high 19 points, and Rudd scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half.
There were six ties and three lead changes in the first 20 minutes as USF led 35-28 at the half. John Egbunu scored 12 points in the first 20 minutes for the Bulls.
“We set the tone early, we sustained the lead,’’ Heath said. ‘‘Johnny Egbunu had a coming-out party; he was fantastic. He controlled the middle. He was great inside.’’
The game was tied at 27-27 with 2:19 left in the first half, and then USF closed the half on an 8-1 run. Allen hit a 3-pointer in the run.
The Falcons were also hurt by foul trouble, especially on their inside players, in the first half.
‘‘Our first half foul trouble kind of took the steam out of us,’’ Orr said.
The Bulls also turned in a solid defensive effort, blocking seven shots and holding BG to a 23-of-64 effort (35.9 percent) from the field, including 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) on 3-pointers.
‘‘We knew they were good shot-blockers; we knew scoring around the rim wasn’t going to be easy,’’ Orr said.
‘‘You have to be smart,’’ Orr continued. ‘‘When you get penetration, you have to look to kick it out for open shots. We didn’t shot great from three.’’
‘‘Their interior defense was a bit of a problem for us tonight,’’ Clarke said. ‘‘When you can’t get inside shots, it’s hard to beat a team like that.’’
For the game, the Bulls were 27-of-46 (58.7 percent) from the floor, including 15-of-24 (62.5 percent) in the second half..
‘‘If you are going to allow teams to shoot that great, you are going have a tough game,’’ Orr said. ‘‘Our guys got fatigued ... Playing that kind of size can wear you down.’’
USF also had a strong outing on the boards, out-rebounding BG, 43-36 as Egbunu had a game-high eight rebounds and Allen finished with seven. Holmes had a team-high seven rebounds.
Clarke led BG with 17 points, 12 in the second half. However, Clarke was only 6-of-24 from the field, including 2-of-7 on 3-pointers.
Spencer Parker added 11 points for the Falcons and Richaun Holmes scored 10 and had a team-high seven rebounds.
Three of BG’s five starters played 37 or more minutes, while Clarke, Parker, and Holmes played all 20 minutes in the second half.
‘‘Our lack of depth hurt us,’’ Orr said. ‘‘It’s really a lot of minutes for our guys.’’
NOTES: BG is 1-1 and USF is 3-0 ... It was the 200th career win for Heath, who was an assistant coach at BG in 1994-95 and 1995-96 ... It was the first career start for Parker ... Chauncey Orr did not play for the Falcons, sitting out the game with an inflamed knee ... Walk-on Josh Jones was added to the roster this week for the Falcons ... BG starts play in the four-game Cancun Classic Thursday at Wisconsin.
