Falcon football selects captains
The Bowling Green State University football team has selected eight captains for the 2013 season — tight end Alex Bayer; defensive tackle Jairus Campbell; offensive guard Dominic Flewellyn; safety Jerry ‘BooBoo’ Gates; defensive end Ronnie Goble; center David ‘Chief’ Kekuewa; linebacker Gabe Martin; and linebacker Paul Swan.
Flewellyn, Goble and Swan were also captains in 2012.
Seven of the eight selections are seniors with Martin being the lone junior.



BGSU baseball blanks Toledo
TOLEDO — The Bowling Green State University baseball team beat Toledo 5-0 Friday. With the win, BGSU improved to 9-19 and 4-6 in the Mid-American Conference.
Cody Apthorpe (3-2) picked up the win for the Falcons, going eight innings and striking out four. Nick Bruns pitched the ninth to complete the shutout.
For the first eight innings, the Falcons clung to a 1-0 lead. In the top of the ninth, Nick Glanzman (2-for-2) doubled and scored two runners to extend the lead to 3-0. Jeremy Shay (2-for-4) doubled three batters later to put the Falcons on top, 5-0.
For Toledo, Elmwood graduate Ben Hammer went 0-for-2 with two walks. Toledo is 12-19 and 4-6.
BGSU takes on Toledo again tomorrow at Scott Park with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.

BGSU tennis downs Ball State
PERRYSBURG — The Bowling Green State University tennis team is now tied for second in the Mid-American Conference after it defeated Ball State University 6-1 on Friday at the Perrysburg Tennis Center. The Falcons are 15-3 and 4-2.
BG faces league-leading Miami (5-1) today at 1 p.m.

BGSU golf takes fifth
DETROIT — The Bowling Green State University men’s golf team finished fifth at the Detroit Golf Club Invitational on Friday with a 36-hole score of 741 (388-353). The tournament featured a unique format with each team competing with six golfers, while using five scores.
Michigan won the tournament with a score of 709. Xavier finished second (722), followed by Eastern Michigan (725), Toledo (725), BGSU (741) and  Dayton (742).
BGSU’s Wes Gates finished tied for 11th with a 36-hole score of 145. Ryan Triller tied for 19th with a 147.
