MUNCIE, Ind. — Behind a career-high 22 points from senior Jessica Slagle, the Bowling Green women’s basketball team posted a 63-52 win over Ball State Wednesday night. The Falcons are 17-3 overall and 7-0 in the Mid-American Conference. The Cardinals drop to 7-13 and 2-5. “With their trapping style, I thought Jess was under a lot of pressure all game,” BG head coach Curt Miller said about Slagle. “I know she’ll be frustrated with the amount of turnovers. But (with) the amount of times she was trapped, she made really good decisions ... and that’s what we needed. “Overall we’re in the win column because of her.” The Falcons used a 10-0 run late in first half, holding the Cardinals off the scoreboard for a 61⁄2-minute stretch, to open up a 17-point lead. Slagle scored 13 points in the first half. “I was really pleased with that last four minutes of the first half ... We had an 11-2 run to finish the half and all of a sudden you’re up 17,” Miller said. BG’s Alexis Rogers and Jasmine Matthews were in foul trouble in the first half and Miller credited the efforts of the other starters and players off the bench in helping the Falcons build the 39-22 lead at the break. “That 17-point halftime lead gave us a lot of comfort,” Miller said. In the 10-0 run, Jillian Halfhill and Danielle Havel each hit a 3-pointer while Chrissy Steffen and Jill Stein had baskets for the Falcons. BG shot 59.1 percent from the field in the opening half, going 13-of-22. The Falcons were 6-of-11 from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes, with five different players hitting a triple. BG’s advantage never dropped below double digits in the second half, with the final 11-point margin being the closest of the period. The Falcons shot just 33.3 percent in the second half, but held the Cardinals to the same success rate, as both teams went 9-of-27 after the intermission. For the game, the Falcons shot 44.9 percent from the floor to the Cardinals’ 34.5 percent. Steffen added 12 points for Falcons and Havel had a very well-rounded game with nine points, a team-high nine rebounds, five assists, five steals and a blocked shot. “She played really composed in a big game for Danielle in her home state,” Miller said. “I’m really happy for her back in front of family and friends.” BG had 19 steals in the win, the Falcons’ highest total in over three years, since a 20-steal game against Buffalo on Jan. 21, 2009. Slagle added a career-high five steals to share BG’s top spot with Havel. Steffen and Stein each had three steals. “For us to do what we did defensively on a one-day prep (preparation) is a credit to our kids’ focus,” Miller said. “We just got our hands on balls and creating deflections ... inside, in crowds, on penetration into gaps. “We won because of that defense,” he added. NOTES: Bowling Green has won 10 straight games and 17 of its last 18 contests ... Slagle and Havel were each credited with playing 40 minutes and Steffen was in for 39 minutes ... The Falcons play at Central Michigan Saturday with tipoff at 3 p.m. |
