Mark Shook
Mark Shook has been named the interim director of athletics at Bowling Green State University.
Shook replaces Greg Christopher, who has been named the athletics director at Xavier. Shook is currently the associate athletics director for compliance and student-athlete services at BGSU.
He begins his new role on May 3.
“In Mark’s seven years at Bowling Green, he has exhibited excellence in guiding the academic support services and compliance departments,” said Dr. Mary Ellen Mazey, the president of BGSU. “It is evident that his leadership will provide effective direction for the athletics department during this time of transition.”
Shook began at BGSU in 2006 and provides leadership and oversight of the comprehensive NCAA compliance and academic support services program. He also serves as the sport administrator for women’s tennis and is responsible for the supervision, evaluation and overall management of the program.
His other main duties include the administration of the Falcon Leadership Academy as well as the intern program for exhausted eligibility student-athletes who are working to complete their degree.
“I am honored that Dr. Mazey has asked me to serve in this role,” Shook said. “I am confident that our strong team of administrators and coaches will continue to put our student-athletes first in our decision-making during this time of transition. I have been a part of many special things that have happened here at BGSU during the past seven years and look forward to the future of our department and this University.”
Prior to his tenure at Bowling Green, Shook spent four years as an academic support services advisor in the athletics department at Purdue. Shook also spent a year as an academic mentor in the student-athlete support services office at Ohio State before moving on to Purdue.
After earning a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from BGSU in 1992, Shook spent a decade as a high school teacher and coach at three schools in Ohio. During that time, he also earned a master’s degree in sport education from Ashland University in 2001.
The search committee to fill the vacant athletics director position has been announced.
Sheri Stoll, the BGSU vice president for finance and administration, is the chairman of the committee.
Other members are: Jill Carr, senior vice president for student affairs and dean of students; Nikki Chiricosta, BGSU student-athlete; Dave Clawson, BGSU head football coach; Rick Hargrave, BGSU foundation board; Daniel Keller, BGSU board of trustees; Amy Lanning, athletics secretary; Lee Meserve, BGSU faculty athletics representative; Diane Tymiak, BGSU foundation board; Jermaine Truax, BGSU assistant athletics director for compliance; and Fran Voll, BGSU board of trustees and a former head women’s basketball coach at BGSU.
