Penalties to offensive line a major concern for Falcons (09-11-12)

The penalties on Bowling Green’s offensive line during the Idaho game are a source of
major concern.
The Falcon coaching staff hopes to have the penalties cleaned up for Saturday’s game
against arch-rival Toledo. Kickoff is at 7 p.m. in the Glass Bowl.
BG had 12 penalties for 89 yards in the game, with 10 of the penalties for 75 yards
being called on the offense. Of those 10 penalties, six were false starts
(procedure).
In BG’s opener at Florida, the Falcons had only three penalties for 25 yards.
"We just self-destructed too often up front," BG head coach Dave Clawson
said Monday about the Idaho penalties. "We had way too many procedure
penalties that really set us back and prevented us from having a more productive
offensive day in terms of points and yards."
At one point in the second quarter, the Falcons went from a first-and-10 at the Idaho
33 to a first-and-40 at their own 37 as a result of two holding penalties and
two false starts. One of the holding penalties was on a tight end.
Clawson said there are six players getting the bulk of the snaps on the offensive
line and a seventh, Dominique Wharton, is working his way back into the
rotation. The starters are Fahn Cooper at left guard, Dominic Flewellyn at left
guard, David Kekeuwa at center, Alex Huettel at right guard and Jordon Roussos
at right tackle. Chip Robinson is the floater playing at both center and guard.

Cooper and Huettel are redshirt freshmen.
"We haven’t had a lot of procedure issues all through camp. You go down to ‘The
Swamp’ and play in front 88, 90 thousand people and you don’t have any of those
issues. Then all of a sudden you’re at home and you have six procedures,"
Clawson said. "It wasn’t just one player. If you fired every guy who had a
procedure, we won’t have anybody to play … It was across the board. Almost
every player on the starting O-line had one.
"There are a bunch of reasons, but they are just bad excuses," he added.
"There is no reason to jump off-sides or to have a procedure. The greatest
advantage on offense is that you know when the ball is being snapped."
JONES HONORED: BG’s Chris Jones is the Mid-American Conference East defensive player
of the week for his efforts against Idaho.
The senior defensive tackle recorded five tackles, 2 1/2 tackles for loss and 1 1/2
sacks. in BG’s 21-13 win over the Vandals. Jones and his defensive teammates
allowed just six yards rushing on 20 carries in the game.
Jones has won the award four times in his career, all BG victories. The senior has
122 career tackles, 31 tackles for loss and 17 sacks.
OWENS: Toledo quarterback Terrance Owens was the MAC West offensive player of the
week.
Owens completed 25-of-41 passes for 300 yards, four touchdowns with no interceptions
in a 34-31 win at Wyoming. Owens also ran for a career-high 74 yards on 13
carries.
His 41 pass attempts were a career high and his four touchdowns equaled his
career-best effort.
STOKES: BG’s Je’Ron Stokes had only one reception in the Idaho game, but it was a big
one for the transfer from the University of Michigan. Stokes caught a 15-yard
pass for BG’s third touchdown in the 21-13 victory. It was his first TD for the
Falcons.
