CANCUN, Mexico — The Bowling Green State University men’s basketball team led by 11 points early in the second half, but could not hold on Wednesday. Oral Roberts rallied down the stretch to beat the Falcons, 63-56.
The game was the finale of the Cancun Challenge.
‘‘If it was a 20 minute game, the way we played the first half, it would have been a great win,’’ BG head coach Louis Orr said. ‘‘It’s a grind and we weren’t able to answer (in the second half).
‘‘Oral Roberts, they historically have been a strong program and they weren’t going to stop playing,’’ Orr added. ‘‘We knew we had to answer their runs, and keep fighting, but we didn’t.’’
Bowling Green made a 21-2 run to lead 35-26 at the half. The Falcons were up 11, 39-28, with 18:17 left in the game. Then a steal and breakaway layup from Anthony Henderson put the Falcons’ lead at 10 at 45-35.
Oral Roberts answered with a 15-5 run over the next six minutes to tie it at 50-50.
The score remained tied for more than three minutes, until Oral Roberts got a layup from Shawn Glover to make it 52-50 with 5:04 left to play.
Henderson answered with a basket with 3:05 remaining to play to tie the game at 52.
Oral Roberts immediately followed with a jumper from D.J. Jackson to retake the lead at 54-52, and then send the Falcons to the free-throw line on the next BG offensive possession.
The Falcons could not take advantage down the stretch, going 1-of-5 from the charity stripe over the final 2:49 of the game. Oral Roberts went 6-of-7 to help seal the victory.
‘‘In the second half I thought we were hurt by transition defense,’’ Orr said. ‘‘They were able to push the ball.’’
Henderson and Spencer Parker each scored 12 points for the Falcons and Cameron Black had 10 points and 13 rebounds. Henderson and Black earned spots on the Mayan Division all-tournament team.
Oral Roberts’ Glover scored 27 points, on 9-of-15 shooting from the field and a 9-of-10 effort from the free-throw line. He was the tournament MVP.
NOTES: BG is 2-4 overall and Oral Roberts is 4-3 ... It was the second straight double-double for Black, who is the first Falcon to have back-to-back double-doubles since Nate Miller posted three straight in March 2008 ... Black was slowed by a leg injury late in the game, but was on the floor at the end ... Oral Roberts was 13-of-15 from the free-throw line ... BG scored 28 points in the paint ... The Falcons host Western Kentucky Monday with tipoff at 7 p.m.
