NOTRE DAME, Ind. — Bowling Green’s hockey played well enough to win Friday night. But the Falcons’ continued inability to score played a large role in their 2-1 loss to eighth-ranked Notre Dame in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association game. The Fighting Irish held a 27-25 edge in shots. Goalies Andrew Hammond of BG and Mike Johnson of ND both played well, stopping 25 and 24 shots, respectively.
ND’s Nick Larson snapped a 1-1 tie with 14:15 remaining in the game. ND opened the scoring with 5:05 left in the first period on a goal by T.J. Tynan, the league’s leading scorer. BG tied the game on Ted Pletsch’s goal with 1:41 to go in the second period. “We did some good things, but didn’t score enough which is the Achilles’ heel of our team ... just no finish around their net,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said. “We missed the net too many times.” BG is averaging just 1.69 goals per game overall, and has scored only 29 goals in its 21 league games. The Falcons have scored one or zero goals 15 times. BG is 8-16-5 overall and 3-14-4-3 in the CCHA. ND (16-10-3, 11-7-3-0) moved into a tie with Miami and Ohio State for third place in the CCHA. Each team has 36 points, three behind Western Michigan and two behind Ferris State. “We expect more execution around the other team’s net which we’re not getting consistently,” Bergeron said. Each team had three penalties, all minors, in the game. Both power plays were 0-of-2. “We squandered both opportunities,” Bergeron said. Bergeron called BG’s first power play “a poor effort” which came midway through a scoreless first period. BG’s other power play overlapped the second and third periods, but lasted just 41 seconds because of a slashing penalty on the Falcons. The BG power play is just 3-of-54 in the last 15 games. BG had a good defensive effort, allowing just the two goals and the 27 shots against one of the CCHA’s best offenses. Tynan and teammate Anders Lee are two of the league’s best players. “We defended pretty well,” Bergeron said. “There were a couple of scrambles and that’s going to happen against a team like Notre Dame, but we weathered the storm the couple of times it happened. It was a pretty well defended game by us.” However, the Falcons failed to tie up Larson’s stick on the winning goal. Larson was in front to tip in David Gerths’ shot from the right point. “All in all, another one of those effort’s that’s pretty good and we have nothing to show for it,” Bergeron said. “For the most part, we competed the way we wanted to and, again, the details and the process of our game were pretty good. But, ultimately, they weren’t good enough. “Being on the wrong side of a couple of plays cost us the game and it’s frustrating everybody because it’s happening way too much.” Hammond played well for the eighth straight game. He has a 1.85 goals-against average and a .931 save percentage in that span. “He didn’t have to do anything other than what we expect him to do and that’s perform,” Bergeron said. “He’s on top of his game right now for the most part. He’s not doing anything he’s not capable of on a nightly basis and that’s what we expect from him.” BG visits ND again tonight at 7:05.
