Miami completes sweep of Falcons (1-15-11)

OXFORD — Reilly Smith had two goals one assist during Miami’s three-goal first period Saturday, leading
the 12th-ranked RedHawks to a 3-1 victory over Bowling Green at Steve Cady Arena.
The RedHawks scored all of their goals in a six-minute span after BG had opened the scoring on Andrew
Wallace’s goal at 5:27.
But the BG lead lasted just 62 seconds as Smith tied the game at 6:29. The RedHawks then built a 3-1 lead
on goals from Trent Vogelhuber at 7:57 and Smith at 11:36.
The win gave Miami a sweep of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association series after a 5-1 win Friday.

The Falcons lost their fourth straight to fall to 7-17-2 overall and 2-14-2-0 in the CCHA, including an
0-9-2 record in their last 11 league games.
BG’s last league win came Nov. 12, a 2-1 victory at Northern Michigan.
Miami is 13-8-3, 10-6-2-1.
Andrew Hammond played well in goal for the Falcons, who were out-shot 32-31.
BG played without leading scorer Jordan Samuels-Thomas, who was a healthy scratch for the second time in
the last three games and third time in the last 13 games. He has six goals and 10 assists.
Although the Falcons lost, they played an improved game Saturday. BG didn’t play well Friday when Miami
dominated.
“All in all, it was a much better effort,” said BG coach Chris Bergeron, who is in his first season after
spending 10 seasons as an assistant at Miami. “I really felt like we played with a purpose in terms of
our competition level and our intensity. There was a purpose to what we were doing. It should show us
individually and our team collectively that we can go nose to nose with whoever.
“You have to execute at the same time. But it felt like on the bench, for the whole 60 minutes, that
there was a purpose to what we were doing.”
But the Falcons couldn’t overcome the early Miami goals, the result of good plays by the RedHawks and BG
mistakes. Miami’s Cody Reichard made 30 saves, 23 during the first two periods.
“If you turn your head for five minutes like we did against a team like Miami, they’re going to take
advantage,” Bergeron said. “It was an even game after that. Even after they scored those goals, there
still seemed to be a purpose and a resiliency.”
The Falcons also were scoreless on four power-play attempts, the fifth straight game they haven’t scored
with the extra man. BG is 0-of-23 in those five games.
Two of BG’s four power plays Saturday were cut short by Falcon penalties.
“Tonight, the power play was a lack of execution,” Bergeron said. “Our intensity level was better.”
That’s made it even harder offensively for the Falcons, who scored zero or one goal for the 12th time
this season. BG is averaging just 2.0 goals per game overall and just 1.56 gpg in the CCHA.
“We have to score more than one goal a game,” Bergeron said.
BG also was without freshman forward Ryan Viselli, who sat out the result of a hard hit into the boards
Friday. Bergeron said Viselli was suffering from a sore neck and back, but did not have a concussion.

But BG sophomore defenseman Max Grover returned to the lineup in the series after sitting out last
weekend with tendonitis in his wrist/hand.
