Home series against Union part of 2012-13 BGSU hockey schedule (4-9-12)

Two home games against NCAA Frozen Four participant Union College highlight next season’s non-league
hockey schedule for Bowling Green.
The Falcons will host Union Oct. 12-13 in the Ice Arena.
Union finished 26-8-7 overall and advanced to the NCAA semifinals before losing to Ferris State Thursday.

Union, which won the Eastern College Athletic Conference regular-season and playoff championships, had
just three seniors.
Among the returnees for the Dutchmen for next season are first-team ECAC selections in goalie Troy
Grosenick and defenseman Mat Bodie; and all-rookie team defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere.?Grosenick, a
finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, ranked second nationally in goals-against average (1.65). His save
percentage of .936 was third in the country.
The Dutchmen, however, did lose forward Jeremy Welsh, who led the team with 27 goals and 44 points. He
signed over the weekend with the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes.
“We’re very excited to be playing a team like Union and it’ll be a great opportunity for our fans to come
out and see them,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said.
The Falcons will play eight non-league games in all next season, and 36 total games.
BG is allowed to play two extra games next season because it travels to the University of Alaska for a
two-game series. Games outside the continental United States don’t count against the 34-game maximum
under NCAA rules.
BG’s other non-league games are two-game series at Colgate Oct. 19-20 and at Canisius Jan. 4-5, and a
home-and-home series against Niagara.
The teams play at Niagara Oct. 6 and in BG Dec. 29.
The game at Niagara is BG’s season-opener and the Falcons will quickly return home after the game to host
the Ontario Institute of Technology the next night in an exhibition contest. Both games are at 5:05.
The series against Union and Colgate start home-and-home contracts. During the 2013-14 season, BG will
visit Union and host Colgate.
The Canisius series concludes a home-and-home contract that saw BG host Canisius this season.
The Niagara series is a one-year contract. The games were added to the schedule to replace
Alabama-Huntsville which announced in October it was dropping its program.
UAH has since reversed its decision, but BG already had found the replacement games.
The Falcons also will play 28 Central Collegiate Hockey Association games, 14 home and 14 away.
BG will play four opponents four times each (two home, two away) and six opponents twice each.
The Falcons will play four games against Ferris, Michigan State, Notre Dame and Western Michigan.
Ferris is the CCHA’s defending regular-season champion. The Bulldogs eventually lost to Boston College in
the NCAA championship game Saturday.
BG will host Lake Superior, Northern Michigan and Ohio State in two-game series.
The Falcons will visit Alaska, Miami and Michigan for two-game series.
The games against Michigan will be mid-week contests, Tuesday, Nov. 21 and Wednesday, Jan. 8.
The Michigan series originally was scheduled for Thanksgiving Weekend, Nov. 23-24 (Friday and Saturday).

But the games were moved to allow Michigan to play a non-league game against Cornell at Madison Square
Garden in New York that weekend.
Next season is the final one for the CCHA because of college hockey’s realignment that takes affect with
the start of the 2013-14 season.
The CCHA won’t exist after next season. BG is one of four CCHA teams heading to the Western Collegiate
Hockey Association.
“It’s really unfortunate what’s happening, but we’re going to work hard to make it a great season and
show how proud we are to be in the CCHA,” Bergeron said.
Ticket prices for BG’s home games will be announced on Memorial Day, May 28. Season tickets also will go
on sale at that time, with renewals mailed that week.
