Bowling Green was picked to finish second in the Mid-American Conference East in a preseason media poll.
A total of 25 media members voted in the poll which was released Tuesday during the conference’s annual media day at Ford Field.
Ohio was picked to win the East with 15 first-place votes and 164 total points.
‘‘Ohio is a great program. They’ve been the most consistent program in the conference for the last five or six years,’’ BG head coach Dave Clawson said. ‘‘They have a lot of returning players ... We have great respect for them.
‘‘To think how a July preseason poll gets picked is going to be motivation for a game in November, that’s not the case.’’
Bowling Green received eight first-place votes and 154 points.
‘‘It is what it is,’’ Clawson said. ‘‘I worry more about our expectations for ourselves.’’
‘‘We can’t let what other people think, whether it’s good or bad, dictate what we think about ourselves,’’ he continued. ‘‘This thing is won on the field.’’
The complete voting was: East, 1) Ohio, 15, 164; 2) Bowling Green, eight, 154; 3) Kent State, 1, 119; 4) Buffalo, 1, 101; 5) Miami, 78; 6) Akron, 53; 7) UMass, 29; West, 1) Northern Illinois, 16, 138; 2) Toledo, 5, 122; 3) Ball State, 3, 108; 4) Central Michigan, 1, 67; 5) Western Michigan, 61; 6) Eastern Michigan, 29.
