NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Jillian Halfhill’s layup with 18 seconds remaining Saturday gave Bowling Green’s women’s basketball team a 51-50 win over Iona in the championship game of the Iona Tip-Off Tournament.
Iona’s Damika Martinez, who scored a game-high 25 points, missed a jumper with seven seconds left and Halfhill grabbed the rebound.
The Falcons’ Alexis Rogers was fouled with three seconds left. She missed the 1-and-1 free throw, but Iona couldn’t get a shot off after grabbing the rebound as Jill Stein provided the defensive effort.
‘‘We got three big plays with under 30 seconds to go by seniors,’’ BG head coach Jennifer Roos said. ‘‘They wanted to win ... We wanted to be that team of destiny today, and we were going to be that team if we could get a rebound and a stop at the very end,’’
Martinez had given the Gaels a 50-49 on a jumper with 36 seconds to play.
BG is 2-0 after posting a 63-52 victory Friday over Michigan in the semifinals.
Iona, 20-13 last season, is expected to be one of the top teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Rogers led the Falcons with 15 points. She was 7-of-17 from the field to go along with a game-high 11 rebounds.
Halfhill, who scored 18 points against Michigan, added 10 points. Jill Stein had eight points and nine rebounds as the starters scored 47 of the Falcons’ 51 points.
The Falcons held a 30-23 lead at the half, making 12-of-25 field goals and 5-of-8 free throws.
BG still held a 44-38 lead with 6:04 remaining before the game went down to the final possession.
The Falcons won despite going only 1-of-11 on 3-pointers.
‘‘We put a big emphasis on putting the ball inside,’’ Roos said. ‘‘We tried to get Jill Stein and Alexis Rogers going from the get-go.’’
The Falcons held a 39-31 rebounding edge.
The Falcons host Niagara Friday at 6 p.m.
