The Falcons trailed the RedHawks, 31-24 at the half, due, in part, to nine turnovers which Miami turned into 12 points in the opening 20 minutes. PHOTO GALLERY
The second half was a different story, thanks to the Falcons’ defensive effort, which allowed the RedHawks to score only 13 points as BG rallied for a 52-44 win.
‘‘It was a huge sense of urgency,’’ BG senior Jordon Crawford said about the Falcons’ play in the second half. ‘‘The talk in the locker room was that we had to do what it takes to win, no matter what it is; we have got to find a way. It’s winning time now and each game we have got to win so that’s what we took in our heads and we went with it.’’
In contrast to the first half, BG turned the ball over five times in the second half, and Miami scored only six points off the turnovers.
After shooting 50 percent from the field (12-of-24) in the first half, Miami was limited to a 6-of-30 effort (20 percent) in the second half by the Falcons’ defense.
The RedHawks were 0-of-6 on 3-pointers in the second half and they were also hurt by a 1-of-8 effort from the free-throw line.
‘‘In the second half, our defense and our rebounding told the story,’’ BG head coach Louis Orr said. ‘‘We handled their traps better and we did a better job of getting back on defense and making them play half-court basketball (in the second half).’’
Meanwhile, the Falcons quickly got back into the game on the offensive end, scoring the first seven points of the half to tie the game at 31 with 15:55 left. Crawford hit a 3-pointer to get BG started and Cameron Black scored twice inside.
‘‘The first five minutes of the half, that sets the tone for the rest of the half,’’ Orr said. ‘‘It got us back in the game and evened things up early without us having to fight tooth and nail just to get back into the game ... That was probably the biggest stretch of the game.’’
The game remained close until BG took the lead for good, 44-42, on a Jehvon Clarke basket with 6:31 to play. Craig Sealey then split a pair of free throws to give BG a 45-42 lead.
A breakaway dunk by Miami’s Allen Roberts (16 points, five rebounds) cut BG’s lead to 45-44 with 3:14 left in the game.
Less than a minute later, A’uston Calhoun nailed a 3-pointer from the left wing to give the Falcons a 48-44 lead and a much-needed cushion.
‘‘That’s an A’uston Calhoun shot there. Only A’uston can pull a shot out like that,’’ Orr said.
Then Crawford and Luke Kraus each made two free throws in the final 32 seconds of the game to seal the outcome.
Crawford finished with a game-high 19 points. Calhoun battled foul trouble in the second half, but finished with nine points and eight rebounds, and Black had nine rebounds and six points.
‘‘Our defense was tremendous in the second half. We were locking up,’’ Crawford said. ‘‘We have all seen that if we get stops and rebound the ball ... even if we’re not making shots, if we don’t let them score and rebound the ball, we are in a good boat.’’
NOTES: BG is 12-16 overall and 6-7 in the Mid-American Conference while Miami is 8-18, 3-10 ... BG held a 45-29 rebounding advantage ... There were eight ties and 14 lead changes in the game ...
