Falcon hockey’s Solway, Ruel doubtful for NMU (03-02-11)

Bowling Green senior captain David Solway is not expected to play this weekend at Northern Michigan,
Falcon hockey coach Chris Bergeron said Tuesday.
The forward has a concussion that was diagnosed following last weekend’s series at Michigan State.
He originally was hurt early in the third period Feb. 18 in the Ice Arena when he was hit in the head by
NMU’s Andrew Cherniwchan, who received a major penalty and a game misconduct for contact to the head.

Solway played the next night which was BG’s Senior Night and again last Friday in the series opener at
MSU, but didn’t play in Game 2 of that series.
BG visits NMU for a first-round, best-of-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoff series Friday,
Saturday and, if necessary, Sunday.
"Unfortunately, I think he was playing with a concussion that was not diagnosed and that’s not about
our staff," BG coach Chris Bergeron said. "David was hiding something because he wanted to
play so badly and hiding is a strong word.
"The headaches just would not go away. He was not himself Friday at Michigan State and that was
enough, probably overdue. I’ll take the blame for that."
He’s one of BG’s best players, totaling five goals and 10 assists in 36 games. He also play on special
teams.
"He’s the glue that’s kept this team together," Bergeron said. "Obviously not to have him
available is difficult. I feel as much for David as I do the team. I know how bad he wants to
play."
Solway is one of two Falcons who likely won’t play this weekend, joining sophomore defense Ian Ruel, who
also has a concussion, Bergeron said.
Ruel did not play at MSU.
"Ruel is a fairly serious matter," Bergeron said.
Solway and Ruel aren’t expected to practice this week.
"The mentality of our staff is if you don’t practice, you don’t play," Bergeron said.
If BG wins at NMU, Bergeron wasn’t sure if either would be available for a quarterfinal series March
11-12-13 at CCHA regular-season champion and fifth-ranked Michigan.
