Falcon hockey loses lead, game to Lake Superior (11-29-13)

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — Bowling Green’s hockey team failed to protect another lead Friday
night.The Falcons held a one-goal lead in the third period, but 16th-ranked Lake Superior scored the final
two goals to earn a 4-3 victory.BG, after trailing 2-0 in the second period, eventually took the lead on
Bryce Williamson’s power-play goal with 17:56 remaining.But the Lakers tied the game 3-3 on Matt Johnson’s
goal just 2:02 later and Gus Correale added the game-winner with 6:25 to play.Correale’s goal was the first
point of the season for the freshman right wing. BOX

“We’re not defending very
well and that’s disappointing,” BG coach Chris Bergeron said.BG has allowed three or more goals in five
straight games and 10 times in 15 games overall.The Falcons lost a lead for the fourth time in the last five
games, three of those leads coming in the third period.BG finished with a 33-24 edge in shots on goal.“We’re
not able to play with a lead and it’s costing us games, Bergeron said.The Falcons are 1-4-1 in their last
six games, all Western Collegiate Hockey Association contests. BG is 6-6-3 overall and 4-4-1 in the WCHA.The
Lakers are 8-4-1, 4-3.The Falcons can earn a series split Saturday night at 7:07.BG scored twice in the
final eight minutes of the second period to tie the game 2-2.Matt Pohlkamp brought the Falcons within 2-1 at
12:54 and Brent Tate’s power-play goal tied the game at 17:46.Lake Superior built its 2-0 lead on
second-period goals from Colin Campbell at 9:11 and Garret Clemment at 12:04.BG’s Tommy Burke stopped 20
shots, while the Laker senior Kevin Kapalka made 30 saves. Kapalka is seventh nationally with a .938 save
percentage.The Falcon power play was 2-of-3 and is 4-of-13 in the last three games. BG was scoreless on 23
straight attempts with the extra man entering last Saturday’s game against Minnesota State.“The power-play
goals were the bright spot,” Bergeron said. “We had time in the offensive zone, we had good puck movement,
we took what they were giving us and we were doing things with a purpose. We were rewarded for that.”Only
four penalties, all minors, were called. The Lakers didn’t score on their power play.Williamson, who has
seven goals this season, scored for the first time since Nov. 1. He had gone seven games without a goal.BG
forward Brett Mohler returned to the lineup after missing nine games with a foot injury.
