Falcon hockey loses Game 2 at Colgate (10-20-12)

HAMILTON, N.Y. — Bowling Green’s hockey team spotted Colgate a 3-0 lead in the first
period Saturday and the Red Raiders held on for a 4-2 victory and a split of the
nonleague series.
Tommy Burke made 23 saves for BG, which didn’t give its freshman goalie much help.

Burke was the starter in place of standout Andrew Hammond, who injured his elbow just
29 seconds into Friday’s 4-1 victory for the Falcons.
BG coach Chris Bergeron said the exact nature of the injury will be determined once
the team returns to BG and Hammond is examined by the team’s medical staff.
Burke stopped 24-of-25 shots Friday and kept BG within striking distance in Game 2.

Colgate scored twice off 2-on-1 rushes and added a rebound goal during the first
period. One of the goals was short-handed.
“For the most part, (Burke) was solid,” Bergeron said. “He didn’t need him to be
great. We definitely left him out to dry. When it was a save he needed to make,
he made it.”
Hammond had started 55 straight games, dating back to his sophomore season. Bergeron
didn’t know if Hammond would play next weekend when BG hosts Ohio State to open
Central Collegiate Hockey Association play.
BG is 1-3-1 overall, while Colgate is 2-3. OSU is 1-2-1.
The Falcons held an 11-9 edge in shots during the first period, but Colgate took its
3-0 lead with the goals coming in a span of 5:45.
The goals came from Tylor Spink at 11:07, Kyle Braun short-handed at 14:43 and Tyson
Spink at 16:52.
“When you look at the scoreboard, this is going to sound crazy, but we had a pretty
decent first period,” Bergeron said. “We had some bad mistakes, we hit the post
on a breakaway, we had chances to capitalize on and they were opportunistic.
“We weren’t able to stop that momentum by scoring,” Bergeron added. “Ultimately, we
couldn’t get it right until the first period was over and then it was 3-0 and
that cost us. That was our game in a nutshell. We had too many mistakes, whether
it was with or without the puck, all night long. We weren’t able to execute.”

The Falcons closed to within 3-1 and 4-2, but couldn’t cut the deficit to one goal.

Mark Cooper brought the Falcon within 3-1 at 11:26 of the second period, but Colgate
regained its two-goal lead when Darcy Murphy scored at 18:33.
The goal came after an icing call and a lost defensive zone faceoff by the Falcons.

“That goal was a back-breaker,” Bergeron said.
The Falcons made it 4-2 on Ryan Carpenter’s goal just 43 seconds after Murphy scored.

BG was out-shot by a 27-22 margin.
Dan DeSalvo assisted on both BG goals.
The Falcons had a chance to stay in the game on the power play, but failed to score
on all five of their attempts. They were 0-of-9 in the series.
“Our power play was really disappointing, really disappointing,” Bergeron said. “Our
top players, their intensity was poor, their execution was poor. The power play
was a negative impact, not even a zero impact. To give up a short-handed goal is
really, really poor.”
BG killed off all three of Colgate’s chances with the extra man and was 8-of-8 in the
series.
