LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Bowling Green’s baseball team scored first Friday, but eighth-ranked Louisville answered with the next seven runs en route to an 8-3 win in the NCAA regional tournament.
The Falcons — in their first NCAA tournament game since 1999 — opened the scoring on Jeremy Shay’s sixth home run of the season in the top of the first inning.
But Coco Johnson homered twice to give the host Cardinals a 3-1 lead.
Johnson hit a solo homer to lead off the second, tying the game. He added a two-run, two-out homer in the third for a 3-1 lead. The second homer came after two BG errors, the last a throwing miscue to keep the inning alive.
Louisville then broke the game open with a four-run fifth to extend its lead to 7-1.
“I was proud of our effort. We played hard,” BG coach Danny Schmitz said. “We knew coming in, we had to play error free baseball and we made a couple of boo-boos there. When you’re playing a good team, an outstanding team like Louisville, more times than not, they’re going to make you pay for it. That’s where the difference in the game was.”
Johnson finished 3-for-4 with three runs and three runs batted in to raise his average to .333. The junior cleanup hitter has eight homers and 47 RBI.
“They were pitches that were up (in the strike zone) and he put good swings on them,” Schmitz said of Johnson’s homers.
Shay also singled to account for two of BG’s five hits.
BG starter Mike Frank was the losing pitcher, allowing seven runs (five earned) on eight hits over the first five innings. He struck out three and walked one.
Ethan McKenney finished, allowing a run on two hits.
Frank normally is BG’s No.2 starter, but he pitched against Louisville in order to keep him and No. 1 starter Cody Apthorpe starting on their usual rest.
The Falcons, 24-30 overall,  face Oklahoma State (39-18) in an elimination game today at noon.
Apthorpe will start against Oklahoma State.
Louisville (47-12) plays Miami, Fla. (37-23) in the second game at 5. The winner advances to the championship round.
Miami was a 7-0 winner over Oklahoma State in Friday’s first game.
