Bowling Green's baseball team has a new set of pinstripe uniforms through donations from Black Swamp Sports and former player Gary Haas and his wife Debbie.
The uniforms were worn for the first time and the donors were recognized at Saturday's game against Toledo.
Danny Schmitz, BG's head baseball coach, said it's been over 10 years since the Falcons have had new uniforms.
"Our last set of full uniforms was our old set of sleeveless pinstripe uniforms," Schmitz said. "Being a mid-major school and a non-revenue sport, it's getting tougher and tougher to stretch the pennies.
"For a Hall of Famer in Gary Haas and very good friends in Jon Treece and Jack Keiffer to step forward to do something nice for the program and nice for the kids, that shows what kind of Falcons they are," Schmitz added. "They are true Falcons."
Haas, an Eastwood High School graduate, was a captain on the 1972 BG team which won the Mid-American Conference championship and played in the NCAA regionals. Haas played for the Falcons from 1971-74 and was inducted into BG's athletics Hall of Fame in 1994.
"I'm able to help because of my education I received at Bowling Green," Haas said. "Without my education I would not be as able to do what I can do.
"The university has always been like family to me and treated me like that," Haas added. "It's good to give back.
Treece and Keiffer own Black Swamp Sports.
"Jack and I are happy to help any worthwhile amateur baseball project in Northwest Ohio, and that is one of the reasons Black Swamp Sports was started," Treece said.
Haas and Schmitz talked about the uniform project at a BG women's basketball game. Black Swamp Sports came on board shortly afterwards.
"I just felt a need there, " Haas said. "I sort of planted the seed that I would buy the uniforms and if they somebody else to contribute that would be great and then the Black Swamp people were able to help."
Haas and his wife have also donated for other improvements to Steller Field, including the dugouts and the batter's eye.
