ATHENS — Accurate shooting sparked Bowling Green State University’s women’s basketball team in a 67-41 victory over Ohio Sunday. With the win the Falcons are in a four-way tie for first place in the Mid-American Conference East at 3-1.
The Falcons finished the game shooting 48.1 percent from the field (26-of-54), including a 47.1 percent on 3-pointers (8-of-17).
They’re always consistent. They always play hard together, which everybody in this league admires,” said Ohio senior guard Symone Lyles about the Falcons. “They work well together, which is hard to play against.”
Meanwhile Ohio had a tough shooting performance, going 15-of-51 from the field (29.4 percent), including a 1-of-14 effort on 3-pointers (7.1 percent).
Bowling Green jumped ahead early, building a 12-3 lead less than six minutes into the game. The Falcons were up 36-17 at the half due in part to a 5-of-8 effort on 3-pointers and 14 points in the paint.
Miriam Justinger scored eight of her team-high 13 points in the first half, making all three of her shots from the field, and four other Falcons each had five points.
“They did a couple of different things to us defensively and we were able to get the ball outside and shot the ball well from the arc ... and also get the ball inside a lot,’’ head coach Jennifer Roos said about BG’s start to the game.
“They’re like a well-oiled machine when they do that,” Ohio coach Semeka Randall said about BG’s ball movement.
The Falcons then put things away in the second half, outscoring the Bobcats, 31-24, over the final 20 minutes.
All 10 Falcons who played in the game scored. BG’s five-player bench contributed 32 points.
“Everybody hit big shots at different times,’’ Roos said about her team which had nine players score at least five points. ‘‘From a coach’s standpoint you are ecstatic because everybody got quality minutes and they were able to play against OU’s starters so they were able to get some good looks defensively and offensively.
‘‘This is the fewest kids we’ve ever had dressed since I’ve been here (12 years),’’ Roos added. ‘‘Ten is not a lot to have on your roster dressed, but I was happy that everybody was able to make such a big contribution.’’
Chrissy Steffen and Allison Papenfuss each added nine points for the Falcons with Papenfuss contributing a game-high seven rebounds.
Roos was pleased that the Falcons made the extra pass as they had assists on 17 of their 26 field goals with Justinger and Papenfuss sharing the team lead with three each. Every Falcon had at least one assist.
“They (Ohio) tried to trap our ball-screens and everybody knows how many we set. We did have to pass out of the trap and make a lot of extra passes,’’ Roos said.
Three Bobcats scored in double figures led by freshman Kiyanna Black’s 14 points.
NOTES: Bowling Green is 12-5 overall ... Ohio is 5-11, 0-4 in the MAC ... BG finished with 28 points in the paint ... BG has held each of this year’s four MAC opponents to fewer than 50 points, and the Falcons’ conference opponents have averaged just 41.0 points per game and shot only 28.2 percent from the floor in those four games ... Jasmine Matthews did not make the trip for the Falcons ... The Falcons host Miami, also 3-1 in the MAC East, Thursday at 7 p.m.
